A reputable mechanic in drogheda area told me not to use the tesco petrol station. Filthy...several cars and month coming back for repair using the same station

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 342 ✭✭andersat2

Tesco petrol Clearwaters: diesel 1.54 Eur/L
Esso Navan Road (near Travelodge): diesel 1.48 Eur /L (6 ct cheaper than tesco)
Esso N4 bybass (near Palmerstown): diesel 1.43 Eur/ L (11 ct cheaper than tesco)

This was all discussed this here before.

The conclusion was that Tesco use Statoil petrol and it all comes from the same place for all petrol stations in Ireland.

Some companies have additives mixed in before it goes to the pumps . All a bit of a marketing screw . Like Topaz saying you get more miles per tank. All unproven crap.
Tesco, Topaz, Maxol esso ect are using the same stuff that came off the same boat.

Although I have read somewhere that Tesco don't maintain there pumps very well as regards filters. So your mechanic could have a valid point.

And if a "repurtable mechanic" is telling you such rubbish, i would question his reputation as for a mechanic not to know the basics of fuel distribution would really worry me.

Btw - as aid above ALL fuel is identical. Comes from the exact same refineries, brought in by the exact same tankers who simply fill one tank at the port up after the other.

Some add an additive and claim 24km per tank extra but in tiny print it depends on driving perfectly on a tank with a capacity of 1500km. Same that driving perfectly will get you to the manufacturer's fuel stats.

Tesco petrol stations are physically filthy and poorly maintained externally. I wouldn't trust the filtration systems or any additives there AT ALL.

Fuel is either refined in Cork (Whitegate) or imported and brought through common gantries so there's very little variation *there* but how its stored/additised afterwards does vary.

Wouldn't entice me to shop at Tescos, always find when you spend €50 at Tescos you come out with a very small amount , and the petrol prices always some dearer then the local garages.

I filled up before from Texaco in Foxrock and found my mileage dropped considerably - 400km/tank to 250. Went straight back up when I filled up at my usual station.

    Just sayin.

It's not the fuel source I'm talking about. It's the filth that gets into the car when filling up with petrol. Those of you saying they don't or barely maintain their pumps are bang on.

Me and the husband both had problems with dirty fuel and it cost us. Both filled there religiously. I don't believe in coincidence. Since changing everything has been fine
Only later our thoughts were confirmed by a very good mechanic.

Are not required to maintain pumps?

I know Tesco in particular, audit every aspect of the brand very often. And Weights and measures do also.

I would be very skeptical about rumors. Lots of people are very anti Tesco for some unknown reason. They love to stretch a small incident into a public scandal.

Just because there is a messy pump, does not mean it is not maintained. Although it does raise a few eyebrows.

Interesting- tesco ballybrack this evening had a large poster for this offer- to be availed of in esso

Had the opposite experience. Running Esso for eons, switched to Tesco for the last 10c deal, was very disappointed. Normally I wouldn't notice, but there was a significant performance and mileage dip (-10% or so). Could have been anything, but it wouldn't have me running back to Tesco to save €4.00 on a full tank. No quibble with you Chuck, just reporting back on my experience. Diesel by the way.

I don't have a voucher but I saw a notice outside my local Texaco that they are accepting the coupon

I found this link on line - Click on other participating petrol stations

meh - i shop in aldi or dunnes, both i find cheaper than tesco .
n tesco has the dearest petrol around

In Limerick, Tesco is one of the cheapest for Diesel and Petrol. Regularly fill up there with no issue.

i think you can fill 100 liter than pump cuts off, you have to put it back and start again .. fill 100 liters ..

it's only per transaction so you should only get 15c off 100 liters, but if you get cashier who doesn't care you might get 15c off both transactions (at the same pump)

THANKS, but as I said, I got a voucher a couple of weeks ago, do they just switch on and off the promotion or is it a permanent offer.
Edit: Actually I see the previous promo finished on the 10th of November.

They are trying to battle against all their customers stocking up in Aldi with the glut of €10 off coupons in the papers. 15cent is not much when spending on 100litres, works out at about €15 off a spend of €160 but afaik there is a maximum of €10 off any transaction.

Yep . Fairly clear there is a full scale war going on coming up to Christmas.

We can only benefit as both stores fight to get us in the doors.

    Long may it last!

Might be worth while if you spend a €100 in tesco, just about worth it. On the other hand they sent me vouchers because I registered for but never used tesco home delivery. Anyone else get these, can I use voucher two without using voucher 1. No ideally how I would possibly hope to spend €80 in one shop. €60 at a stretch if I stock up on booze at the same time.

You can only use voucher two if the first one is out of date afaik if you got the truck shaped voucher in the post, I got one for €15/€10/€15 but i notice others got €25/€15/€25 vouchers:(

€25/€15/€25 euro is what I got. IIRC they were all dated December 22nd. Would be leaving things a bit late at that point to stock up on booze for christmas.

The petrol prices at Tesco Clearwater are a rip off and have been for a good while now. I used to fill up there 3/4 years back when they were competitive but no longer. I wouldnt mind but since they jacked their prices the station is like a ghost town, you never see any Qs of cars at it. Plus its not as like they are on the main n2 road like Esso and Topaz are a couple of kms closer to town, to get into Tescos petrol station you have to peel off the main road. So not only is their location sh1te they're also charging some of the highest prices. Every little helps, eh?

There are only about a dozen places countrywide that are taking part in this ridiculous offer, Has it anything to do with the latest supermarket ratings where SuverValu were only a couple of points behind Tesco and may well be the biggest chain before the next quarters figures come out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭mikeecho

    While 10c off is great...
unless you get the max of 100L , and save €10, its not great.

also , i do believe that doing the equivalent tesco shop in an aldi/lidl would save you more than the €10.

also, i think someone posted before, stating that most ppl only save €2 or so by using the tesco fuel voucher, as they only buy a small amount of fuel.

hey.. but each to their own.

4c a litre dearer than the local average to begin with here. Unless you already spend 100+ in Tesco this deal isn't worth it.

You could shop in Tesco and get the pricematch, or buy items not typically on sale in Lidl/Aldi (although harder to get the amount in this case).

Using a voucher for a small fill is not rational, such people cannot be helped.

Quality? Tesco? Not sure what planet you're on

This'd be the Tesco with the wilted fruit and veg, ratty fresh meat and a couple of convictions for food safety in recent years (Maynooth and Prussia Street at the very least) we're talking about, right?
