Just looked on the American website of Apple.com and I clicked on iPhone 4S for specs and it is currently free if you buy one locked to a network. Is this right and why free?

It's on a contract. You can't buy from the us store here.

Because you will sign up with the network for a contract. Three here do a similar offer.

Ah I see. I just went ahead to see what additional charges are there and yeah you are signed up for a 2 year contract with the networks.

I know you can't buy from here guil but I'm heading to States next month so I was just checking to see what price were the MBP

You are getting the phone for free, but you are hooked to a two year contract of at least $70 per month.

Nothing is sold for free...... Free is free unless free has terms and conditions applied.
