i used to have a mondeo petrol and was asking my mechanic on the numerous times i went into him what should i get for mileage and reliability and he said a japanese diesel. so i bought a corolla van, a 99 with the bubble lights and japanese engine 2.0l. what a beast of a yoke. i since sold it cos i needed the rear seats and stuff but i really regret it now.

i used to stroll around on a nice flat tarmac, open the window and listen to the engine purr in 3rd. was fantastic. and everyone i talked to said they were the bees knees and never broke down. had it for 3 years and never a spot of trouble. one time it wouldnt start and the mechanic was amazed cos he literally said he never heard of one breaking down but all it was was the key had lost its memory. was a cheap copy!

anyway was just wondering if there was anything else comparable to these engines around. am thinking of replacing my car soon and had a look at some of the old vans but see it as a step backwards, most of them have huge mileage and whatever. i have another corolla now, petrol, but it just doesnt have the same chemistry.

the honda vtec are good arent they? any engines of the japanese cars made in japan anymore or are they mostly made by peugeot and renault in europe? the likes of toyota, nissan, honda and mazda is what i am thinking of.

Your old engine was simple technology, anything after that will be turbo and more complicated.

Do you need a van or diesel?

If looking for something newish and diesel a golf or an octavia with the 1.9tdi engine would be your best bet.

it will be hard to get something which offers the same level of reliabilty as those old late 90‘s corollas though. they were very well built.

well i dont need a van anymore but i am doing maybe 200 miles a week so it might not hurt to get a diesel. would you recommend a 06-07 passat jb?

so are diesel engines nowadays all turbo? i didnt even know it wasn't:)

They were old school but they were not a pig of a yoke. They had a more robust engine also than the model you mentioned above.

    A '99 Corolla diesel, 'a beast of a yoke' - I've heard it all!

Check out a 1.9 tdi. You will probably literally shít yourself.

Early models of that passat had their issues. Later ones are suppose to be improved. If buying get the 1.9 over the 2.0 as it's a more reliable engine.

Yeah they didnt have the DMF blah blah blah

They were the slowest hape of an engine and brutal on juice compared to the 1.9 pug variant ..

    Toyota... :pac::pac::pac:

I said a more robust engine. I didn't mention anything about a dmf;)

The pug engine you are on about wasn't that much better on juice compared to the Toyota engine. The corolla engine is far superior to that pug engine they fitted to the facelift.

Your argument about the engine been slow isn't that great of an argument seeing as there was very few fast diesels around at the time. Most were slow old school lumps.

Fully agree with you.. 306 td was the start of "quick diesels" in that era..

I won't agree with you on the juice mind.. Having owned 2 of the corolla vans (both work related) and still driving a pug 1.9 and my 3rd at that!

One of them did like clutch cables mind.. Release bearing was a fault.. 2 cables in the space of 50k miles wasn't bad mind
