Burning old timber outside.

    How's it going folks...

I cleaned out an old shed for my parents there a few weeks back. Made separate piles of the waste. Have a big stack of old timber, been covered with a tarpaulin and I was going to burn it.

I've been living away from Ireland for a while so I'm not sure but my parents are convinced that I cannot burn this outside.... it's far away from the road or any other houses. Anyone know if it's illegal to do this? Seems strange if it is... I can burn timber inside my house, but not outdoors in a field

    Appreciate any advice...

As far as i know you are allowed burn timber in a "safe and controlled manner" and that no "accelerant" (diesel, waste oil, tyres etc) is used provided there is no vegetation on it. However, you are obliged to inform your local county council of the place and date you intend to do this and they in turn inform the local fire brigade. That i understand is the situation in cavan but it probably varies from county to county.

Not sure what the the law is but everyone around here seems to burn in the middle of the night. One neighbour even set fire to an old mobile home that was no longer required.

you need to fill out a form in ur local council office, theres no cost,
as stated they notify the fire brigade and ur covered if somebody else rings about it,
if u dont fill out the form you could be liable for fines ect from the environmental or litter wardens,
the form will also say what ur allowed to burn, most natural material allowed, ie no plastic or tyres
your better off filling out the form and handing it in, at least ur covered

In wicklow you inform the council, they send out some genius to look at what you are going to burn, if he thinks the heap is too big he tells you to make a number of smaller heaps... You then fill out the form , and here's the really stupid bit, nominate which day you intend to burn!! ... It could be lashing rain, could have a gale, wind in the wrong direction etc etc and the genius rolls up on the appointed day to make sure you do the job.. DONT GET ME STARTED..

i just informed my local fire bridage and showed them on the map where the fire would be and a rough time. Gave a mobile number also so they could contact me if someone rang 999 about a fire in that area. spent much of the day under ditches hiding from planes :D

To be honest it might be a good idea but if you have a fair bit of cop on there was no need imo .Just when ya light her up make sure its a calm damp night and whatever you do make 120% not one aerosol from a garage like wd40 gets in they are lethal when they go off

    Cheers lads!
Yeah I know chopping up and using it is an option - but its moved a bit away from the house now and to be honest some pieces are just not worth chopping up, poor quality crap, doubt it would have much thermal value. I spoke to the council yesterday - she didnt say anything about needing a permit or anything - just said since it was old bits of timber and didnt cause nuisance to any house when burning then it would be ok. Guess it differs from county to county ...

@Zoo4m8 - LMAO :) - nominate a day! As you said, in this country, with our weather... are they mental!

Do you have to go through all this if you was having a barbecue?

Burying a better option or leave it to rot in an out of the way corner.
