I was driving to Cork earlier today and when I went past mallow there is a piece of the road which is a single carriageway with white hatching markings on the left.

A woman in a little red skoda, who was driving up my arse shot into the hatched area and undertook me. I have seen people make a lot of silly mistakes driving through the years but this was different in that it wasnt a mistake. She wanted to get by and just didnt give a hoot about the rules. It was close to a junction and could have had serious consequences.

What do be going on in some peoples heads at all?

I've seen many things aswell that are beyond my comprehension

One I met on the N4 heading for sligo....

Oncoming traffic one slow car and a car going mad to pass but I was close so he couldn't make the pass.

As I got within 100ft he shot down the hard shoulder past the car and back out. By far the most dangerous manouevre I've seen.

I really don't understand what does go through peoples heads at all sometimes!

I just had a look at the list of penalty point offences. I see dangerous overtaking and using a phone both get you 2 points as does Driving a vehicle on a motorway against the flow of traffic.

Is it just me or should this be overhauled to punish people who do seriously dangerous thing severely. For example Driving a vehicle on a motorway against the flow of traffic or dangerous overtaking should attract at least 8 penalty points. I dont use a phone while driving but it would annoy me that getting caught once for this relatively minor offence gets the same punishment as driving the wrong way on a motorway.

Am I mad or is the system fairly weird?

It's completely flawed, there should be no points for driving against the flow of traffic, it should simply be a guard escorting you to the nearest safe point and him/her saying the following "Give me your F***ing licence".
Speeding should really be incremental, caught doing outrageous speed maybe 8 points caught doing little or nothing over 2 points kind of thing.

Just really needs an overhaul dh, doubt it will ever happen!

Taking the slip onto the M1 at Swords today heading south, and there was a car reversing back up

I would have no problem with anyone who was thirty mph or more over the limit getting a fine of a thousand euro instead of 80 euro. This is something that could be a revenue generating measure for the government and make the roads safer.

Leo, if your listening take note.

I would see something like below reasonable:

    Speeding by (over the limit):
    0 - 10km/h - €10, no points
    10 - 20km/h - €30, 1 point
    20 - 30km/h - €100, 2 points
    30km/h - 40km/h - €300, 5 points, 1 month driving ban
    40km/h - 50km/h - €700, 10 points, 3 months driving ban
    over 50km/h - €1500, 1 year driving ban.

Allowance could be less strict on motorways.

That would make much more sense than current €80, 2 points for anything you do.

Years ago a fella was caught near Paulstown Co. Carlow speeding for the 3rd time. A while later he was up in front of Judge Mary Martin. She took the law to the letter which at the time said you could be fined £50(pre Euro) for going 1 mile an hour over the limit. She fined him £50 for every mile over the limit he was 92mph in a 40mph zone. Fine of £2600, 30 days to pay/ 1 month in default, no leave to appeal.
