Rhythm / tempo

Cant find any recent threads for this, has anyone got any good tips/ drills to help with rhythm & tempo.

I know i am playing good golf when these remain consistent, unfortunately for me 1 bad shot/swing means i lose my rhythm and then spend the rest of the round battling to find it again especially for my driver.

    Any advice?

Im just wondering here but are you any better with the 3W rather then the driver?
The reason im asking is that i cant really use my driver at all so i use my 3W off the tee and works out fine, i normally find myself up with the rest of the last and dont lose much yards, alot of the time im actually still further then them using the 3W

Just an idea - check youtube for vids on tempo aswell alot of good ones out there

Same difficulties with a 3w but with slightly less extreme results, usually a little more control than with driver.
The question doesn't relate to just driver but rhythm in general. It is probably worse off the tee as in my mind I am trying to hit it "as far as possible" where with an iron i am trying to hit it specific distances ... if that makes sense..its usually when i am in between clubs & trying to force one that irons cause an issue.

Thanks for the response though any feedback is welcome.

Suppose it depends on what sort of swing you have. If your hips start the downswing, then focus on not hammering from the top, let the hips go first, then shoulders. Getting quick at the top is only going to make poor shots.

Point is to get the swing speed at maximum at impact, not top or mid swing.

I found my tempo is different with my irons over the driver.

With the irons a practice swing is a must. With the driver I place the head behind the ball to check the height, stand back and adjust my grip, step up to address then swing. If I think too much about the driver I usually fluff it.

I struggle with tempo on the driver swing like yourself. As you were saying with the irons it's not a problem because I am hitting to a very specific distance. For me the key is the takeaway with the driver. If I can bring the club head back in a nice smooth steady motion then I can accelerate naturally in the downswing. When I lose confidence with the Driver I take it back way too fast and then try to murder it on the downswing and that's when bad things happen.

At the range hit five balls with your driver to the 150, then five to 200 and then five full shots.

I've come on a good bit with my driving over the summer and have found it a big help to do the following drill, I'll christen it the Goldilocks drill John ;)
I'll do it less with the irons but I'll use it the odd time.

    Pre shoot routine:
    1. Swing as fast as possible (too fast)
    2. Swing as slow as possible (too slow)
    3. Swing somewhere in between (lovely porridge)

It's a useful drill for letting you're brain know what you want and don't want to feel during the swing. It might be worth a go for you.

Maybe try and hit you driver a certain distance. Just say flat out hit out of the sweet spot is 300 yards approach the shot at i want to hit it 270 yards or 90% so you are aiming for a spot 270 yards away.
If you are hitting your 3 wood as far as your driver u have the wrong shaft in your driver.

I've picked up one of the SwingByte analysers & it has a Tempo statistic.

Any ideas on what is a solid target tempo? Think my ratio was coming out on average somewhere between 3:1 & 4:1 (ie back swing takes 3 times as long as downswing)

When mine goes I try to think of the pros hitting long irons and drivers....when you see them live they are just so smooth.
    I aim for that.

I think they reckon that 3:1 is pretty much bang on. Of course it depends on the player but that seems to be tour average as well

I remember reading an article somewhere (you prob posted it Alx?) that nearly all pro's have a tempo of exactly 3:1.
One pros swing could take 50% longer than another pros, but they'll nearly always have a ratio of 3:1.

    Edit:
Sorry Alx, it wasn't you, this video is where I heard that.

I'll join in on that one. I have the Zepp Golfsense device and was playing around a bit over the weekend.

I find it very hard to keep it. Its the first thing that goes after a bad hole. One tip iv seen lately is using tick tock to control your tempo. Haven't used it in play yet as id like to hit a basket in the range first. At take away you say tick and at the time you say 't' on the tock you are striking the ball.

Seemingly no matter what club you hit from PW to Driver the time it takes from take away to impact should remain the same consistently. There is no way most amateur golfers are doing that. Definitely not me. One video even demonstrated it with putts short and long. Tick Tock exactly like a driver. Mad.

If you ever look at someone who looks like they have a fast swing its because they are all arms. If your body (shoulders and hips) are dictating your golf swing pace, like they should, its impossible to look like you have a fast swing as you can only rotate your core so fast. Look at the pros. So graceful.

People confuse swing speed and club head speed i notice. They think the need a stiff shaft because they swing the club so fast. Tempo and rhythm should be consistent but your club head speed is in the last quarter of the swing then your wrists release the the club. Thats where the pro's 110mph club head speed is generated. Not from swinging you arms like a lunatic. Its all in the wrists.

Is there anyone else who has used this tick tock idea. Makes sense to me.

I downloaded a metronome app for my phone and have used it while practising putting but have yet to try it for any other shots

Have you tried closing your eyes closed while practise swinging. Really helpful for me.

Watched a golf video once, the guy said tempo is 3:1 so his drill was to say "Straw-berry moose" on the backswing say Straw-berry and for the down swing say moose.
    Hope that helps.

    Excellent tip.

Tried it with the driver at the range earlier and it worked nicely.
