"golden" numbers used to be a thing, especially for businesses, but everyone wants 0851234567 or something and all the good ones are taken, I have a cool one on an old sim card someplace.

Crazy news. But this can be a way for the govt. to make some much needed money.
A man in India spends Rs 13 Lakh (close to 16000 euros) for a "fancy" mobile number that ends with Eight zeroes.

    http://newindianexpress.com/states/kerala/Fancy-number-craze-Rs-13-Lakh-for-eight-zeros/2013/10/13/article1834290.ece

Let people choose their car numbers, mobile numbers and let them bid.

And how the hell do you propose the government make some "much needed money" out of this?

    Simples,
Make many numbers end with 8 zeros and sell them all.

Maybe the government could set up one of those premium chat lines?, and have Joan Burton on it?

If the Govt wanted to make some real bling, they would set up a direct line to Enda K-Dawg and charge us a premium price to fock the head off him for 5 minutes.
Joe.ie could get in on the act by having a direct line from his show as well!

I got a number very similar to that :pac: No, I didn't pay for it.

It's a bit annoying because every time I tell someone my phone number, they think I'm kidding.

So are the government setting up their own network now or just buying all the existing ones at a cost of whatever billion euro so they can make 16 grand off a few people?

Or letting you loose into the same room as Dame Enda for 10 minutes with one of those foam tube things you see at swimming pools and charging you for the pleasure, that would be a great stress reliever.

For example, next year people can bid for say a car reg :141 D 007
    or 141 C 12345 etc.etc.
There are still many who would be willing to pay a premium for this (perhaps anonymously)

You can already reserve a reg for a fee of €1000 (or at least you could, not sure if you still can) . It doesn't bring in much money.

    They can't I'm afraid.

Car registerations in single figures only contain that number. There are no zeros in front of it.

So that reg would be 141 D 7.

As for your second example, it would be worth a lot more if the reg was 141 G 12345. :D

And exactly how many unique and exclusive numbers ending in 8 zeroes could you come up with seeing as the first two have to be 08, let's see shall we....

    OK, we've got

    08 00000000

    Next one?

Actually, you could have an infinite number of numbers ending with 8 zeros.

when I signed up for the tv phone net bundle thing with upc years ago the engineer asked me did I want a tailored number, I was like what did you have in mind, so he said 2345678 (think that's how it went anyway and area code ended in 1) was available so I said yeah sure go ahead. It was a good few years ago and I no longer have the number so feel free to dial it if ya like.

Phone numbers have 7 digits not 8, so in that case you have zero numbers containing 8 zeros.

Yes, it used to be €200 but they got greedy and in so doing, killed the market for them.

In Australia, I seen mobile numbers for sale in shops etc , some worth more than others and not cheap either. Seems like a big deal with Asians

Did you not read the op? We can put the price up to 16k and make a fortune sure.

Write down your mobile number and count the digits.

Worked in a launderette, had a customer come in with a number like 4567456 or something similar. She became a regular, we got talking about the number. She'd been offered a substantial amount of money from a company to give them the sim card that the number was with. This was in 2007 or thereabouts, mind.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
