At certain places on first floor there are gaps between laminate floor and skirting boards. Its a timber structure. The gaps aren't massive but noticeable. House is ten year old. Is this a major problem

Laminate floor is designed to float, and has enough of a gap around it to expand and contract with atmospheric conditions. If the original installer put it in with a decent gap, it could well have pulled back enough to be exposed from underneath the skirting board, not to mention movement of the house itself. As long as there are no other signs of movement of the house, I'd put it down to the flooring and house just settling.

From an aesthetic point of view, the easiest solution would be to put some beading round the bottom of the skirting board in the room to hide the gap - this is what most installers would do if they were installing laminate in a room that had pre-existing flooring such as carpet, rather than ripping up the old skirting board and putting in new stuff.

Thanks for that info. In parts the floor doesn,t seem level. I take it this is the floating. Just going to carpet it anyway. Thankks
