Blesso is probably one of the best pike lakes in Europe.

You are practically guaranteed to pull out at least a few 30 pounders every session.

Once in a blue moon you'll get a nice double. Never mind a 30
Blesso is only picking itself back up again. Been poached really bad the last few years. We all know by who.

poaching is bad, but lowered waters levels at spawning isnt helping along with the reduction in stocked trout all adding the ingredients to make it a ball breaker

Blessington is closed for pike in October and trout season is over. So you'll have t wait till November for the pike mate.

your not garenteed to catch fish anywhere to be honest, but put the effort in and you always have a chance.
not sure your allowed to camp on blesso.

I will personally guarantee you that you will catch at least five 30 pounders in a day on Blesso. Easy.

If that's the case you should be a guide then.
Sorry but I have fished blessington and I reckon I've fished the whole lot of it and I've yet to touch a 20 in it
Biggest there is 14 and that was years ago. I've caught plenty of pike up there but Jo big ones.
My mate caught one up there 15 years ago on a mepps one an it was 34z that's the biggest I know up there but I did hear that there was a 40+ caught this year.

Hi just a few points you raised
Yes you do need a fishing permit
They are €5 for adult day permit
The trout season is over as stated before but the lake reopens for all course on 1st November.
Camping is not allowed anywhere near the lake and the ESB have regular security patrols.

Fishing is improving over the past few years and this year was generally good

I did hear from a very good source that a 40 pounder was caught last year and returned to the Water

The levels are very low at the moment so any reed beds are gone.

Best of luck - Blessington Lake is known as a difficult water but there are good fish in it

You can get permits in Blessington in the Maxol station or Charles Camping
Fishing is allowed in daylight hours only

As said before it depends on the water. For example dirty water would be best for baits.
Clear water can be bait or lures.
I love using lures or spinning for pike. The takes do be real exciting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,964 ✭✭✭Seller159

ok thanks. think id rather lures and spinners anyway its more exciting when fishing than haven to wait around for god knows how long lol

Il be up myself prob next week at some stage. There's a place up there that during the summer has little water but once the rain comes it fills up and odd time you'll see decent pike moving out of the reeds as I walk past so il be floating a roach and spinning one aswell up there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,964 ✭✭✭Seller159

will you be well let me know how you get on if you do go there:) id love to get some nice pike I have been dying to get some lol:)

I'm hoping for big one meself.
Don't mind being out in the Baltic weather if I'm catching decent fish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,964 ✭✭✭Seller159

yeah im the same ill sit out in the freezing cold all day once I am catching something then I wouldn't get to annoyed lol. but that's fishing some times you win and most times you lose ha ha.

The good thing about piking is I can have a rod out with pop up dead bait and then walk 60 yards each side of it spinning keeping myself warm
Once I can hear me bite alarm I'm fine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,964 ✭✭✭Seller159

yeah that's prob the best thing to do. id do that me self ill prob bring 3 rods lol two baits and one spinning rod so have something to keep me occupied lol.

ha ha yeah man my pike rod a bait rod and spinning rod lol have to keep my self busy and helps make the catching easyer much better that way lol:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

Can't remember but I think the rules for blessington is 2 rods per angler. Not entirely sure. But either way est to keep busy. Doubles your chances at catching something anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,964 ✭✭✭Seller159

is it really :( ah well two will have to be then lol two is fine anyway its plenty really its all you need.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭Pj!

Two rods is the max allowed for anglers in Ireland.

It could be argued that this is harsh on pikers. Many have a third rod for when things are quiet. You won't find too many who have a problem with this either. There are even reports of bailiffs turning a blind eye to it if the angler is clearly well prepared (good bite indication, unhooking mat, correct unhooking equipment) and the rods are not too far apart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,964 ✭✭✭Seller159

well iv no problem with two rods will do me just perfect :) its always handy to have an extra one there incase anything happens to one or evan just to fish with the two at same time so ur not fed up lol

Have ya gotten out yet mate?
I was supposed to yesterday but house party on Friday night resulted in mess rugby and a tackle on wooden floor that resulted in me being on couch for weekend.
    Still not 100%
