Personally I'm sayin now if Cain wins by dominating like he did last time out then he's the better fighter discussion over
    BUT IF
Junior drops Cain on his face with a massive punch in round 1 then everyone's going to want them to fight again straight away and who could argue with that?

I love this fight it's got everything, I don't know who I want to win now and I hate watching a fight without being up for someone. I have tons of respect for both guys and Cain is the fittest fighter in MMA history IMO but JDS has the best boxing in HW MMA history I reckon so I dunno I'll decide on how cool their walk-ins are!

Who can call this fight ... it's gotta be totally impossible to call.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

    Impossible? No!

Cain will dominate here. He's a much better ask rounder than JDS. Junior has the power, but everywhere else he lacks in comparison to Cain.

It's a really good card too. Looking forward to it!

in any case, i don't think this will be the last time we see Cain vs JDS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

Remember in the last fight most people conveniently forget that Cain established his dominance by landing 1 big flush punch early on Junior.. who never recovered. It was this punch which set up his victory for certain.

Who's more likely to land a big punch early in this third fight? Most would say Junior is... so I don't see a stronger argument for either fighter. It's right down the middle for me.. can't call it.

Cain will surely come out and try land a take down straight away right from the bell when JDS is fresh and primed to stuff a take down or land his punch... it's all about the start of this fight!

    What a card.

I expect Cormier to easily outpunch Nelson. Miocic showed how a simple gameplan of avoiding the overhand right is successful.

Marquardt, Lombard, Sotiropoulos and Noons are probably fighting for their jobs. Kaufman/Eye should be a mighty scrap.

DC is officially after Jon Jones !

He's not exactly after Jones... He just doesn't want to fight Cain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,516 ✭✭✭Hoki

If Cormier drops to 205 then i reckon he'll have to have at least 2 fights before he gets a crack at Jones. If Jones beats Glover & Gustaf beats whoever he's scheduled to fight next then the rematch will happen again before Cormier gets his shot. Can't wait for the Cain v JDS fight, i can only see Cain coming out on top here and i expect something similar to their last fight.

Nice looking card, I might actually watch this one, Marquardt - Lombard is at WW I guess?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

Cormier is the only guy who can potentially rush Bones into the fence early and keep him there and work for a takedown. His stand up is nowhere near good enough to stand with Cain or JDS IMO. Bones is certainly a better fight for him than JDS or Cain. If he can live healthy down in the 205 range he's a credible challenger which is great because Jones ain't goin near HW this side of 30 based on the Gustafsson fight... no chance.

My heart will be in my mouth watching the main event, I'll be rooting for Cain all the way.

Great all round card but it's gonna be a tough fight for me to watch and not have a heart attack

As well as the main event I'm looking forward to the women's bout a lot. Fact fans - Jessica Eye has only been beaten once in her career and that was by our own Aisling Daly.

I've decided I'm goin with JDS... Cain is probably the better fighter if I'm being brutally honest (but supporting fighters is about being completely dishonest to yourself at times)
JDS by KO or TKO within 2 rounds. He's too happy a bloke not to support!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Unless JDS lands a big knockout punch again I cant see him winning this.

Cain is just a beast, the most dangerous guy I have ever seen.

Love both of them though and pumped for the fight, nothing like two monster heavyweights going at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Cain is less than 1/2 to win. That's a pretty accurate price imo.
For the last fight, the bookies had the lien a mile off. Made a nice bit on that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭crybaby

Will be cheering on JDS but would be surprised if it wasn't a repeat of the 2nd fight.

    JDS....I believe

people will still say Cain is the better MMA fighter even if JDS knocks him out cold.

There's too much emphasis IMO on a 'rounded' MMA game these days in the way people critique fighters..how rounded your game is doesn't matter a damn if you can win fights doing whatever it is you do. The best fighters out there are not that well rounded IMO (with the exception of Cain) most of them rely heavily on their particular talent, Silva's is to not get hit, GSP's is to be able to take you down and keep you there, Bones uses nasty kicks to keep you out of range, JDS is the best HW MMA boxer we've ever seen and Cain simply outworks you forever.

just never thought it makes sense to compare fighters based on how rounded their whole MMA game is across the 3 ranges when some guys are so talented at one particular range... if that makes any sense, does to me anyway. Cain can be as rounded as he wants but if JDS can knock him out on Saturday AND in their next fight then he's the better fighter IMO no matter how not-rounded his whole MMA game is but people will always say otherwise. That's what makes this fight great. On paper Cain should win, he's got more ways to win and more gas in his tank but JDS is a powerful and accurate enough striker, at his best, to finish this fight in the first 40 seconds... that's when he's most dangerous and if he can execute that - then he's the better fighter.

There's such a huge amount of respect riding on this fight I can't wait for the bell!

A fact I read today that I though was interesting:

Both Velasquez and JDS have 11 UFC fights, and they have both been champ, yet they have no common opponents.

Wow, i just had to check that as was sure you were wrong, especially in such a small division but yeah, no common opponents, thats crazy

Yeah I went and double checked it too. I couldn't believe it when I read it. As you say, it's such a small division that it seems unbelievable.

I was a JDS fan. I suppose I still am. He seems like a genuinely nice guy and he has great hands. But I think Cain will get the job done again.
I think, barring a big well placed punch from JDS, it'll be much of the same from Cain.

I like them both, JDS is supposedly one of the nicest guys in the sport, Cain i like cos he's a fcukin animal.

Unfortunately for JDS i can see this fight going only 1 way, and that's to Cain, the only hope JDS has is if he lands a bomb in the first 2 mins, after that Cain will just dismantle him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

Cain seems more focused and serious whereas Junior seems like a happy go lucky sorta dude, well at least he DID until he lost...in his more recent interviews he's kinda more serious since that big overhand left from Cain landed flush!

Cain's leaning overhands are properly powerful, he wades in with them with his head to the side the way Randy did with big Tim. If I were JDS trainers I'd have him countering those badboys with his own shorter inside overhands/short hooks, preempt it and get inside ..you're not gona to roll under or lean back in time they're too fast and it's Cains most dangerous weapon. Cain will use his overhand to push JDS back and stop him from finding early rhythm to set up his wrestle and strike - this is where JDS will catch Cain I reckon.. mid punch BOOM! Joe Rogan has a bombgasm..

Hope nelson comes away with a W. He is looking quite svelte from a recent pic!!!

Gotta love his title logic too:
3 fight win streak: I deserve a title shot
2 fight win streak: I deserve a title shot
1 fight win streak: I deserve a title shot
1 fight losing streak: I deserve a title shot
2 fight losing streak: I deserve a title shot
3 fight losing streak: I deserve a title shot

Also neither has ever fought Overeem. Odd.

Marquardt vs. Lombard is going to be the largest WW fight ever. Loser could possibly be cut depending how many fights left on their respective contracts so all to play for here.

KJ Noons vs. Soto could be one hell of a scrap and again the loser could be walking.

Dodson vs. Montague will be your usual Flyweight fight. Entertaining, lightning fast and go to a decision.

Melendez vs. Sanchez has fight of the century written all over it. Between them they've only been stopped once (Sanchez) and that was by BJ Penn. I predict Melendez to be the smarter fighter here and get the win. I said it before, I'd love to see Pettis vs. Melendez.

In Cormier vs. Nelson I expect that Nelson's power punches will be nullified by Cormier's wrestling. Hopefully Nelson comes into this fight with an enlarged gas tank as Cormier will be grinding on him from the start.

people will still say Cain is the better MMA fighter even if JDS knocks him out cold.
I'd doubt it. The average fan has a short memory.

Cain steamrolls the HW division - The greatest fighter of all time
JDS KO's Cain - JDS won't lose for years, Cain who.
Cain reclaims the title - Cain is so rounded, JDS only has that one punch KO.

If JDS knocks him out again, the general opinion will flip and take up ridiculously extreme viewpoint.
In a general sense, when a persons viewpoint changes so easily, its likely to be wrong.

There's too much emphasis IMO on a 'rounded' MMA game these days in the way people critique fighters..how rounded your game is doesn't matter a damn if you can win fights doing whatever it is you do. Side point, but GSP is by far the most well rounded fighter in MMA. Maybe he relied on wrestling recently, but verses Koschek it was a different story.

Cain is more well rounded than JDS, but that isn't why he is seen as a better fighter (or at least shouldn't be) - he is better simply before he is better.
As far as HWs go, they both are far more rounded than the rest of the division, and its even close.
Anybody here think Junior gona get it done? or are we mostly Cain fans?
Based on the odds, the masses have switched over to Cain.

Before the last fight, Cain was nearly 2/1 to win, now he is nearly 1/2.
I was definitely in the minority picking Cain the last time. I don't think bet on him this time, too short.

Dos Santos had to get stitches 3 weeks ago, looks like it could open up fairly easily.

Should Cain target it straight away and get the blood flowing for the judges? would that be honorable? Some people say anything goes to get the win but I dunno..

IMO, he needs his head examined if he doesn't go after it right away. Like any sort of knock, you should take advantage where you can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,438 ✭✭✭✭El Guapo!

Of course he'd go for it. Nothing dishonourable about it. It's a weakness and it's his job to exploit that weakness as best he can to get the win. It's no different than, for example, taking the fight to the ground if you know your opponent is weak on the ground.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

You always carry some sort of knock into a fight but it's unfortunate it's slap bang in the middle of his forehead... one good slicing elbow and it's gona be a bloody affair. I'd watch for Cain to go to the fence with JDS..bump and break... and throw the elbow.

If the beard is on, then DC by decision is the only real choice to go for with the bookies for Saturday. Finishing probability goes down exponentially with every second that thing is allowed to grow longer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

anyone interested in the Sanchez Melendez fight should check out his Sherdog interview vid. seems in good nick, got his black belt in BJJ recently, trained hard as a mofo for 14 weeks, lots of altitude training, seems confident he has cardio on Melendez, can't wait for that one.

both good grapplers, both prefer to stand and bang, both have been through wars. It's a celebrity name for Melendez to take and he will be expected to win but Diego could possibly wreck his momentum....possibly

Nelson is looking a lot slimmer in the weigh ins. Sanchez is mind bendingly crazy as usual. Expect his fight to be a war.

Havent seen much of Cormier but I wasnt impressed with him as some people seem to be,Hope Roy Ko's him 5/1 for the knock out.

Massive respect for Cain... the man is so stupidly fit... never seen anyone in any weight division fight at that pace for so long!

    but

IF Junior swings and connects with anything at all ... hook.... overhand.... uppercut...ANYTHING flush... it's curtains on Cains championship!

and people will still say Cain is better... guaranteed
but that simply will not be true

If Junior knocks him out he's a better fighter !

    end of story

    .

yeah he's in the best nick I've seen him not an ounce of fat. I think he should be able to utilize that power to stop Cain's shot. This whole fight is about one thing: The accuracy of Juniors punches. He lands one he wins!
