Are there any other symptoms, is it hard to start, making any funny noises etc?

No Starts fine , It does growl a bit but when you put the foot the it heads for 3000 rpm instead of speeding up , You just have to give it time , but the poke is defo gone , It is shame because in its day it had great poke

    Some kind of vacuum leak?

Had this issue on a newer version Avensis and it was the turbo pressure sensor hose that had come off.

It was between the engine and the radiator. I found it when I noticed some oil on the plastics of the radiator.

Rev counter going up but speedo not.

Driving along at steady speed, put boot down, revs go up, speed stays the same, take foot off pedal, revs go back down.

make sure you find out the price of getting it done before you go to the garage as for a petrol avensis prices go from 350 to 600 depending on where you go.

I'd let your mechanic supply it, for warranty purposes. But that does look like the kit you need. They're not expensive, but that really is a good price for it.

You're better off getting your mechanic to supply and fit, otherwise your position is weaker if it goes arseways later.

240 k on an avensis td is no problem .Clutch isnt too hard a job on them and the kit is an alright price. Its defo worth doing if you still like the car. They are one of the best toyotas ever built with that engine.good luck with the job on it.

For that one comment alone I'd be keeping it. I had a 98 TD Avensis, bullet-proof.
Head gasket failed on it at 200k, the mechanic just stuck in some radweld and told me to leave it for 2 days. 100e later and 50k more the car showed no more signs of head gasket failure.
Got rid of it with 255k i believe
