I want to get into mountain biking. Hoping to do both cross country and down hill.
People have told me the best value is in second hand bikes ...... But ........ People have also told me to get new as

    1) mountain bikes take a lot if punishment so you could be buying a bike somebody has wrecked

and 2) the value is only there if you really know about the bike/ components that you are looking at ( which I know nothing about )

Any thoughts on new versus second hand and also which bike to get? Any advice is much appreciated.
    Thanks

    What's your budget?

I considered used but like you said you dunno who really has been doing what with it before you.

I bought a new Voodoo Bantu only yesterday, air suspension, hydraulic breaks etc and at least I know the crank, bearings etc are not on the way out.
