Hi I have the ariva250, just wondering is there any way to tune in the scrambled channels like Comedy Central and national geographic even with a card or something? Thanks

You need a subscription and Sky card. Since they supply a box "free" there is no need to discuss how a Sky card might work in something else. In any case Sky will terminate the card if they learn it is being used outside a sky box.

But it won't work on an Ariva.

Yes it will. But it won't update. Therfore a useless exercise. You'll find yourself taking it out after a day.

That in practical terms is "it won't work" :D

How would you get a valid sky card and not the free Sky box anyway?

But what's the card slot for on the Ariva box?

It's possible to receive the channels but sub channels move around alot more frequently than fta ones so you would be forever looking at a scrambled message on your screen. It's really not worth the hassle. Also the patched firmwares can f-up your box. After installing one on my box the hdmi port wouldn't work so I could only use the patched firmware with start. Went back to original firmware and hdmi started working again thankfully.

(Card sharing discussion is also banned on these boards so I'd be careful what you ask from no on OP.)

Thanks for reply. I wasn't aware that they were banned. Should have read mod notes first. I won't ask anymore, was just curious what the slot was for. Thanks for the replies. I'll stick with my fta 😄

While certain activities are not for discussion on this board, outright lies should also be banned.

Cards only need to be returned to Sky boxes every 5-6 weeks to update entitlements; although if you were to get a new box and card from Sky now you won't be able to receive HD or premium on another box.

Subscription channels very rarely move around - there have been some moves recently, these were necessary. And the vast majority were FTA!
There were other moves a few months back because Sky are now able to fit an extra HD channel onto transponders.
Other than that moves are rare.
Many people think the "hassle" is worthwhile (it is no more than an opinion that's been expressed and presented as fact that it's not), because they can discard the blue screen channels and have the channels in their own order with their choice of regional variations. Here in Ireland they also gain channels like the HD ITV subscription channels. They're happy to pay a subscription but find the hardware limiting.
However, it is against the terms and conditions of your contract with Sky to use it outside of the Sky box, although apart from a few that seem to frequent this board, I've yet to hear of anyone being put off by this.

Fair enough if certain activies are banned from discussion but don't lie about them (and why some people would confuses me - what do they have to gain?)

I've nothing to gain if that's what your implying, as for the sub channels changing frequency, I thought the likes of sky sports and sky movies moved around on a more regular basis no? The likes of channel 4 has probably moved once in the last 3 years, do the sports channels not change more often?

    Not implying anything, just wondering.

You stated as a fact that the subscription channels move a lot. Why do that if you're clearly unsure?

And, in answer - changes are rare, maybe more often than once in 3 years but isn't that relative and certainly not "a lot more"?

You asked a genuine question (and didn't bring up cardsharing) so please do not be afraid to ask questions. We are all here to increase our knowledge.

You can use the Smart Card Slot on the Ariva to subscribe to other television services in other countries. Example Soccer. They are normally on other satellite positions. If you go onto the "foreign satellite" section, you will understand what I am talking about.
