So if the top Pros in the world played your course, off the back sticks with the course set up same as your Captains Prize (or equivalent toughest setup) what kind of scores would you see?

I'd imagine they'd shoot 55 or so considering Arthur Pierce shot 61 a few years ago (although I think that was off the white tees).

I'd fancy someone to go around in 60/61

    Not sure they'd manage a 59 ;)

It's something I often wonder about to be honest.

Tramore is a par 72. The par 5s would be par 4s to them quite simply. Most of the par 4s they'd be pitching on for their second shot and seeing how lethal they are from that sort of range I'd expect them to get up and down half the time. The par 3s and longer par 4s would be straightforward to them too, they'd expect to be hitting it close to the pin with their irons. The greens are relatively flat and slow compared to the ones they'd be used to.

I'd imagine a top pro would be disappointed to come off the course with 66 or worse. If you had a full timesheet of them I'd say at least one would break 60.

By the way, Tramore is generally regarded as quite a tough track.

Tiger set the course record of 67 the European Club on his first visit there. Only 4 under but those who have played will know how good that score is. Particularly so on your first time around.

Rory was -1 off the tips there [European] when he was a nipper, could have even been -2 or -3 at one point on the home stretch. Some going!

Off the tips I'd say they'd be happy enough with anything under par with a tough set-up

Depends on the course, if you're a member somewhere like Lahinch then anything under par would be a good score, your bog standard parkland and if they weren't double digits under par I'd be hugely surprised...

Bad greens might actually work against them in some cases...

Parkland, but it's over 7,600 yards off the tips.

What course is this? Do the members ever play it from the tips?

Killeen Castle. They run a sweep off the tips on Sundays sometimes, but there's no standard scratch off those tees. SSS off the next tee up is +3 or 4.

I can't imagine playing a 7,600 yard course. I think Tramore is 6,700, but we very rarely play off the blues as the members find it too long! I'd like to play off them a bit more often to be honest.

7600 is some monster especially with the water in play there, it's a pity more competitions aren't played from the tips. I played the JSC in Knightsbrook this year which was off the blues and I found that long at 7270 but really enjoyed the course and day.

Padraig Harrington won a scratch cup in athlone gc a good few years ago. Am not exactly sure of his score but Ricky should know it.

Tigers 67 off the back tees in the European is up for debate. He shot 2 balls on a couple of holes as far as I'm aware.

Philip Walton shot a 67 at Bandon a few years ago, when he would have been past his prime

    It's crazy long, 8 par 4s over 450, 2nd is 613 yards and par 3 8th is over 240.

Have you played it off the back? Did you come close to a birdie?

The set up there for long approaches into par 4's, the protective bunkering, just seems an impossible task at that distance.

Chances on the par 3 6th as it's 190 or something off the back, but that green is so protected.

If you are not long of the tee, that course will slay you, it's tough off the whites if the wind blows.

Played it on Friday, the course is immaculate for the weather, greens didn't have a pitch mark nearly.

Only played parts of it off the backs cause I haven't played much on Sundays this year. Senior Scratch was off the blues and it was pretty tough and long, brings far more of the fairway bunkers into play off the tee as well, but you can still make a few birdies.

Yeah the 6th is tricky to hit with a 7 or 8 iron, but from back there...

    Very untrue.
No gimmes or mulligans were had when he shot the 67.

The speed of greens would be a factor as well. Pros find it very hard to play on slow (for them) greens.

In fairness, Arthur Pierse was one of the top amatuers in europe for a period of time and is still a class act, you should see him hit a golf ball, he's unbelieveable tee to green and as good as any pro his age. Only problems is the putter.

I don't believe the score would be as high as you might think. The best golfers in the world played in the JP pro am in limerick golf club in 2000 and I think the best score was 63 ish by stuart appleby but he was unceremoniusly DQ'd because he used a range finders and the record was given to Tiger with a 64 despite the fact that Tiger used his amatuer playing partners wooden 3 wood. Was a PR exercise to ensure they have a course record held by Tiger on their wall. Interestingly enough Redzah came closr to woods record with a 66 a few weeks ago. Do you think the powers that be would be replacing woods name?

Anyways, despite the above, Limerick is certainly not the hardest track and the best score over 2 days of the best pro's in the world was 63.

Talking about yourself in the 3rd person now ? Good thing you didn't let that 66 go to your head :P

In Blarney they had a Pro/Am Comp last year where Challenge Tour Pro Peter O Keefe shot a 67/68 for the course record off the tips, although I know a 2 handicapper(PJ Owens) shot 66 in the Sept Medal off the tips but wonder if all the tees were back, didn't play myself. Par 70.

I know that Pinseeker who posts here had a 65 from the whites early last year aswell.

If you had 150 pro's going at the course I'd imagine that someone would surely shoot 61/62!

Enjoyed a nice spell of golf up there ssbob:), i think the numbers of players you mention are why you would see 61/62. A pro isnt just going to rock up and shoot the lights out on any given day on our courses. Most people are thinking of there home course and saying to themselves a pro would be nearly on this green in one or that par 5 in two and so on.

However its like your taking for granted thats where they will be on the course. We all watch golf and the pros can be all over the place. When your watching the leaders they are the ones on form and holing putts for that week. With 150 pros having a craic it would surely mean 1 or 2 would be right on there game and so you should see a very low score alright, Too break 60 on any course takes a hell of alot to go your way.

Gmac shot a course record 61 in Baltray in the second round of the Irish Open. The craziest thing about it was the day before he had shot a 77 in round one !!!
