    Hi,
I got my eircom upgraded to fibre and got a the new F1000 router with it. The router has 2 usb ports, and the config page says it can act as a print server.
I have a HP laser p2055d printer, so i plugged it via usb into the router, the router sees the printer and gives me an address for the printer. Problem is no other computer can see the printer ( via wireless ) on the home network.

Basically i want my printer plugged into the router via usb, and then be able to print from any pc in the house - is this possible with the set up i have? any advice for how i go about doing this?

call into eircom tech support and get them to update the firmware on the modem to fix the wireless isolation bug... it should fix your printing issues

    Thanks for the reply Fred,
Hi thanks for the reply, I contacted Eircom tech support, they told me 100% that i cannot plug my usb printer to my F1000 modem/router and access that printer from other pc's in the house.

They told me the only way to do what i want is to have either a wireless printer or a printer with an ethernet port.

Are they correct? My router page for printer looks like this - see attached

It could be a feature that hasn't been fully implemented.

Did they at least update your router to the latest firmware?

Try using a separate wireless router (Netgear, Belkin or any other router brand; connected to the F1000 modem) with USB printer sharing feature.

Test firmware is 1.00(aaha.4)b2 which I think Freddy above was suggesting you get installed.

Ethernet printing on a home network tends to be messy, mainly because the printer will normally have to be on a fixed IP address (which tends to be the norm on a commercial/office network), and the home router will be allocating a DHCP address to it that will vary depending on the order that devices are powered up.

So, the first issue will be to make sure that the router is configured to allow some addresses in the available range to be NOT allocated by DHCP.

The exact how will depend on the make and model of the router, and you will probably need to configure the router using a wired ethernet connection, most routers won't allow configuration changes via wireless connections by default, though they can be changed to allow it, but using a cable is easier

Once that's been done, the next step is to go into the printer network settings option, and make sure that it's NOT using DHCP, and that you allocate it an address from the block that's not used by the router DHCP block. You may also need to set subnet mask, and the router IP address depending on the make and age of the printer.

Once these 2 steps are complete, you then need to set up the printer driver on the PC to access the address on the printer, and the exact How on that will depend on the make and model of the printer, the exact procedure will vary depending on those factors.

Once one is working, it should be easy to get others working, the set up of the driver will be basically the same on each PC, with possible variations if the PC's are not on the same operating system.

You should be able to access the printer's web access page by entering the printer address into your browser in the format http;//xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, where the x's are replaced by the IP address of the printer. This normally allows access to some settings, and the status of consumables etc, again, the exact options will depend on the make of the printer, but the above concept will be the basics for Epson, HP, Ricoh Lexmark and Sharp printers, which covers a pretty large % of what's out there.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁
