Irish workers helping with the rebuild are sharing the love but it seems they may also be helping to spread sexual diseases.

While there are no concrete figures to analyse who is giving chlamydia to whom, health data show the number of confirmed cases in the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) region has been increasing since 2011.

Board sexual health director Edward Coughlan said the clinic had started recording the number of Irish nationals making appointments, and there had "definitely been an increase" in the past two years.

Title is misleading. From the report:

"CDHB member Aaron Keown said New Zealand historically had high rates of STIs but guessed it would be local women passing infections on to rebuild workers and not the other way around."

Should retitle as "Irish victims of for-din-ers (in for-din-ers own country) with STIs"

Kiwis can be a blunt but friendly bunch. The Irish potato eating, hard drinking and fighting stereotype is well ingrained there especially in Canterbury and down south in Southland, Otago. In my experience they are generally ignorant of the outside world but probably not their fault as they are miles from anywhere of note. Having hordes of Irish people turn in CHCH ready to build them new city is going to lead to interesting times.

from experience that's true enough; in a friendly way in general though, fiddly de de potatoes gets mentioned a lot. They're a pretty racist country because of the white / maori historical divide anyway so it's probably just a reflection of that.

I worked with a lot of kiwi bouncers recently. Got talking to a few of them and they seem spot on. Always smiling and joking. The only thing they said about Ireland was they like Rory Mcilroy.
