Has anybody had experience with Hub Dynamos, similar to these?

    Yes.

Like hubs generally, there are some variations in bearing quality, weight and resistance, but they all have the same output so are cross-compatible with the various lights.

I've been running an cheapish Shimano one for a couple of years (maybe 15000km in all conditions) with no issues. Haven't even had it serviced.

I have been running a Schmidt for 12 years with zero issues.

Not all lights work with all hubs as some hubs earth of the frame, schimdt have - /+ on the hub.

You always have lights you never get caught out, forgot you left them on.

    Best investment I ever made.

bought a front dynamo wheel from bikediscount for my now sold touring bike,
shimano hub worked perfect and a great price.
i reckon a new built son wheel would set you back 250euro.

Shimano DH3N80 (their best one) comes in at 160 including Mavic rims, fully built, 36 spokes with tube and Continental GP4000S tyre on rosebikes.co.uk.

I got an SP hub dynamo from ebay and built it into a wheel for my tourer. I've added a B&M light with USB output and a Phillips rear light. I haven't used it much, but it works great so far. I can get great light whenever I want, charge my smart phone and the drag is un-noticeable. Highly recommended.

    Front wheel only.

You should go Shimano.........half the price, same function. No discernable drag difference.

523gr. V 390gr. Possibly a slight weight disavantage but what the hell.

@FSL: you can get the DH-3N30 on rose as a complete wheelset for less, supposedly more drag but if your not concerned about speed.

@Planet X: I agree accept for the fact that the SONs do look nicer, but the 3N80 is a great hub IMO

Be a perfect commuter/touring wheelset for someone on a budget (meeee), probably replace the tires with 32 or 28's though.

    Cheers :)

And luckily my dogsbody is a tricross, so plenty of room for 35's (but mudguard's might be a problem then).
