Religious courses

    Hello,

I'm interested in possibly doing some sort of religious study. I'm not sure which area but pastoral care and theology were the first to come to mind, however there might be others which are more interesting or suitable.

I know Maynooth have a number of courses but all seem to be long degree type courses and I guess I was wondering is there anywhere nearby that perhaps runs shorter courses? My thinking being that it would be a good way to do some study and suss out the areas for me without an initial long term commitment. I'm catholic and living in Dublin so somewhere in Dublin or nearby would be the best options for me location wise.

    Thanks!

Offhand, for free but excellent quality courses there is Edx : www.edx.org.
I think there are some courses which touch on the subject of religion and as well there is an upcoming Bio-ethics course which will feature John Keown of Georgetown.

The Milltown Institute, Milltown Park, Dublin 6 runs several different theological courses at different levels. It is run by the Jesuits.

The IBI offers some excellent full-time and part-time courses

I know a number of people who have done them and have nothing but praise for the quality of the teaching

All Hallows run an excellent program for adults - Pathways. It's more about exploring your faith and a basic intro to theology. It runs over two years, but I'm sure you could sit in for a term.

Hi Kryptonmight, there are so many studies of theology that I'm sure it's hard to know exactly what area you are drawn towards, also philosophy which is part and parcel..

Perhaps Biblical theology is a good place to start and the 'St. Paul's Centre for Biblical Theology' has great talks by many scholars that are well worth a google..and absolutely free - hours and hours of talks by serious professionals.

You could also download an app by lighthouse media called 'Ignatius Press, Lighthouse Catholic Media' - brilliant for homing in on topics of interest and pointers towards what may shed a light on what you may like to study and eventually teach.
