Unidentified Flying Object in Cavan

Perhaps someone can provide me with possible explanations.

Yesterday morning, as i waited at the end of the road with my son for the school bus, he suddenly said ''WTF?''
and was staring out the window. I could not see past him and he would not elaborate (being a taciturn teen!).
When finally he leaned back a minute later there was a short stubby vapour trail in the sky in the East, just beside the mountain. He said, ''I just saw some big glittering thing look like it burst into flames.'' We both looked at the stubby 'smoke' trail, and shrugged. I only half paid attention to tell the truth. Things like meteors went through my mind as possible explanations and I thought nothing more of it.

Then, this morning, as we returned to the same spot, I saw a LARGE bright yellow light in the eastern sky beside the mountain, a bit further away from where the vapour trail had been, but close enough. This bright yellow light was above the side of the mountain, distinct from any horizon line or tree line, and it was stationery. To me it looked like there was a faint triangular outline enclosing the bright light.
We both looked and thought what the heck is that. Planet? said my son. Way too big for that. Star? said my son. Way too bright (and yellow) for that. Airplane? said my son. It's not moving. Planes move. Helicopter? said my son. Hmmm, possibly. Looks really really weird for a helicopter, but maybe you're right, son.
Then, it started to move, slowly, in a 45 degree diagonal trajectory and went out of sight behind the mountain. There was no sound, no distant echo of helicopter. If it was a helicopter glinting in the morning sun, it could not have moved the distance in that time. This was a slow, smooth-moving large yellow light, but given the distance between me and the horizon a small helicopter going behind the mountain would have taken longer. The morning was entirely still and frosty. I can usually hear the neighbours fart in the farm across the valley on such still mornings (heheh..you know what I mean)..but there was no sound.

I am an open-minded skeptic when it comes to UFOs. I think most objects can be logically explained. But I am also a least open to the possibility of extra-terrestrial cause.

What are the likely explanations for this thing?

Chinese lantern or the Draconids meteor shower was earlier in the week, but that was only really visible after sunset, I think.

Cavan man opening his wallet? Actually that's not very likely, probably aliens so.

Claus Transglobal Distribution Network. Always run tests on the sleigh this time of the year and strangely enough always use the great Cavan Metropolitan Area due to the methane slipstreams from the excessive amount of cattle in the region and their bad diets.

Only 74 days left to the big night.

That explains why the crops are growing so well.

    Hahahahah! You are all gas!

As for the most scientific explanation offered thus far...iridium flares...that does not explain the stationary nature of the object before slowly moving.

As for drugs, i wish! But no, just a big mug of mint tea before leaving the house... :)

As for all the Cavan jokes, lol, yeah, yeah, ye got me..hahah

Honestly, I was just looking at it and going through all the possible explanations in my head and nothing was matching the evidence of my eyes. I will bring a camera next time and provide the obligatory fuzzy shots next time :p

Beauty was the concept that came to my mind, Whoopsadaisydoodles.
I have to admit I felt kind of like a child again. Awed.

I think now if a UFO proved to be ever extra-terrestrial in origin I would not feel afraid. Before i always thought I would be kind of freaked out...
    :)

It was in the sky, man! It was in a clear blue empty sky. There was a good distance between the line of the horizon and this object. Yeah, maybe it was a bus...LOL

Having looked at pics of iridium flares I will say that it could possibly explain yesterday mornings ''stubby vapour trail'', although this trail was fatter than what i seen in pics of flares.

    Hmm...possible. :)
This other thing this morning held it's round yellow shape as it eventually moved. A satellite you say?
    Also, very possible.

Fascinating story.theres something fishy going on in the skies, so many people reporting things they can't explain over the years

Where was the sun in relation to all this? I would guess it's a reflection along the lines of a rainbow, there could be some sort of updraft/moisture coming off the mountain that's catching the light, as the earth rotates it's moving the reflection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,641 ✭✭✭Hardonraging

Clearly it was Sean Quinn's 'new' Stealth helicopter ...

I must call up to the house to see it my self soon

As I mentioned in OP this was in the East. Yes, the sun was rising over the mountain and this thing was about 25 degrees to the left of the sun, so of course my initial thought was ''reflection''.

And if the thing had remained stationary I would have thought, okay, reflection....off what i would still be a bit puzzled by, because the whole thing was largish. At that distance it looked about a third the size of the moon as i would normally see it sailing through the sky. BUT it was the eventual movement that had me going WTH? It was a slow deliberate diagonal trajectory out of site behind the mountain, and my mind was racing trying to compute explanations.

Okay, sorry to bore you all :) Many Thanks for your offered explanations, many very plausible. I think I am still left feeling a bit like ''WHAT was THAT?'' More than likely there is a perfectly sound reason for what I saw.

Having said that a couple of months back my older boy and his girlfriend were travelling here on the bus from Galway and he said both of them clearly saw a long cylindrical metal object without wings in the sky. They both said it defied their rational minds. He is an ultra-skeptical engineer. At the time we all laughed about it, and shrugged it off. Isn't that kind of what we all do? None of us wants to be the mad eegit who saw a UFO.

I just don't know. I am going to keep my mind open on the possibilities. Thank you all. :)

    Yeah.

The light changes a lot in the early morning, your going from ambient light to direct light which could account for the change in direction. The earth also moves in relation to the sun, rainbows move position too.

Thank you ScumLord. This and the iridium flares explanation are probably the best theories. I wish you had been there. :)

the PSNI are using drones since last April, and there is currently a cross border manhunt after yesterday's shooting in Derry.

Is this a possible explanation I wonder?

Wow! Yes...you could be onto something there. I live on the border, plus where this was would have been just into the North. I actually got a photo of one of the drones when i went on the G-8 march and it was quite large and eerily silent..looked like a strange white plane.

Okay!! :) They can go from stationary to moving, I think, so this heads my list of rational explanations. Thank you.

IF you think that's good, you need to read some Cormac McCarthy
The thunder moved up from the southwest and lightning lit the desert all about them, blue and barren, great clanging reaches ordered up out of the absolute night like some demon kingdom summoned up or changeling land that come the day would leave them neither trace smoke nor ruin more than any troubling dream.
The sun was just down and to the west lay reefs of bloodred clouds up out of which rose little desert nighthawks like fugitives from some great fire at the world's end.
