Sorry if this was asked before but did many(or anyone) buy his book? I bought it at the ploughing. Read bits of it here and there. He seems to be on top of his game.

Yep bought it at the weekend. Nice book actually. Was a bit sceptical about it in the beginning buts it's an enjoyable read. He sorry they come across as top class farmers. Some size of a set up.

I bought it also muckit, I liked it as it opened my mind to a different way of farming altogether. I took it to the my better half's home place in Tipp and they all liked it as it covered life as a farming family also

I had a drunken debate with him one night about fox-hunting and all things 'anglo'. A great bit of crack and able to see the bigger picture. He also helps out at charity work. He could portray himself as Oliver McDonnell but is closer to John Shirley. Another nice guy who has loads to offer the farming community.

Bought it and noticed that a lot non farming friends visiting the house love it.
Reckon it'll make a nice stocking filler.

I know him very well and what you see is what you get

Amazing how little return from a really top class operation

Yes indeed. He doesn't sugar coat it. You have to 'admire' those on way less acreage and poorer ground that have themselves convinced that a full time living ('existence') can be made from their beef farms. Optimistic or dillusional. .. take your pick

The book is €15. I wouldn't call €2.99 pricey to post it, the weight of it. Your not buying off amazon!!!!

You'd have to like farming to bother, but a lot of these enterprises were built on the subsidies of the nineties and then cast in stone in the reference years.
€600-700/cow was possible on every suckler to beef unit and if he was calving 250 cows, he has a substantial single farm payment (as he said himself).
In my opinion, grand read for non farmer but irrelevant to the average farmer

where are you getting it at that price?

    their website says 17.99 + €7 postage

    http://www.talbotsofcoolefarm.com/a-year-on-our-farm.html

    which is a nice bit.

Sorry JohnBoy!!!!!! Apologies, my mistake. l'm an idiot. ... l had a quick look at that page and assumed the 17,99 included postage ie 15 like at ploughing +2.99.

Your right. ... postage IS a rob!!

Is it worth it for that money. No shop in mullingar has it and you can only get it online I'm told. Portlaoise have it as the author is local :(

Went to post office with a parcel for France last week. Wanted €60 to mail it.

Brought it to TNT depot. €24. Delivered in 3 days.
On point of principle I wouldn't order Talbots book, and be fleeced for €7 postage. Total rip off.
