Motor Tax Query

Motor Tax is due at the end of the month. Usually pay in 3 month installments.

Can I pay before the 15th in case there are any increases? Or if I wait till the budget is announced and do it online that night?

Rather wait till the end of the month if possible however don't want to pay more!

You can pay this month online if it expires end of this month, I think

Very unlikely motor tax increases will take effect immediately from midnight after the budget, most likely be from Jan 1st. But to answer your question, you will receive the reminder letter/email about 2 weeks prior to the renewal so you will be able to tax it online from then.

Thanks. Guess that's what I really wanted to know. I got the email reminder last week so would like to wait till the end of the month to pay however didn't want to get hit with a potential higher amount if I waited.

Yeah, it's unlikely (imo) that tax hike will take effect pronto. Just pay in time so you get the disc before old one runs out.

Motor tax increases went in to effect overnight after the budget last year.

Cost us quite a bit extra as the tax office couldn't process the applications on the day we sent them.

Are you sure you don't mean VRT? The tax on my yoke increased last January.

Found my mail communications with Motortax@ddtas.ie from 6th December last year:
    ME wrote:
    Good Morning,

Yesterday we couriered a batch of motor tax applications for January 2013 to the XXX tax office.

The accompnying cheque was based on the figures on the tax renewal forms we have recieved for these vehicles.

This morning we have recieved a phone call to say the XXX tax office cannot process the applications because the new motor tax rates announced in yesterdays budget are now in force.

As we applied for these at the stated rates on the renewal notices, and the applications were with the tax office before the increases were announced, I fail to see why the higher rates should be imposed.

I actually fail to see why higher rates should be imposed on anyone renewing tax before the 31st December, and would appreciate if you can clarify this situation as quickly as possible as there are quite some number of applications involved, and we cannot have vehicles on the road in January that are not taxed due to a clerical error.

    Regards,
I refer to your email regarding motor tax for January 2013.

Increases to motor tax and trade plates were announced in the Budget on 5 December 2012 and approved by Financial Resolution of the Dáil. Accordingly, the new motor tax rates came into force from 06 December 2012, and apply to motor tax discs and trade licences taken out for periods commencing on or after January 1st 2013

Can't remember the exact amount, but it was hundreds if not in to the thousands, as we've a massive amount of renewals in January.

last december i taxed the car in early december about a week before the budget. (tax was up on new years eve). I got it for about 470. If I had taxed it the day after the budget it would have been 514.

Not what you want to hear but if you pay it in one chunk for the year you will save the 5 to 8% it's going up in January.

But is it going up in January or from tomorrow?? From R.O.R correspondence is looks like it will be from tomorrow!
