What would happen if a giant space turd engulfed the Earth?

Science cannot and has not disproved the existence of gigantic, continent sized space turds. I feel the possibility of the planet being splattered with one is something which is too often swept under the carpet and ignored - perhaps the thought is just so horrifying that people feel the need to bury their heads about it?

What kind of effects would we see from such an incident?
Could such an extinction event become known as the Cr-Ap extinction?
