What would happen if a giant meteorite hit Earth?

Imagine looking up one day and seeing a giant meteorite about to hit the place. It'd be scary.

Would mankind survive from the fallout? What would happen if it hit the sea instaed of the land?
Would Ireland be destroyed? Maybe enough of us could set up a base on Mars in time?

Is this is a possibility in the future?

Hopefully a giant would eat it first.

How do you know we're (as in the universe) not already in the stomach of a fat kid?

I refer to the closing sequence of Men in Black I

If a giant meteorite is to ever land on planet Earth in my lifetime, and reenact some sort of Dinosaur age like trauma for our species, I hope it lands right on my house.

    Fuck living through that shit.

Absolutely didn't you see the start of the movie Armageddon "It's happened before....IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN"

It's a near certainty (from a probability standpoint) that earth will again be hit by another asteroid of catastrophic size. But that could be in 1 Million years or 100 Million years.

There's no guarantee that humanity will even be around that far into the future.

Depends what kind of meat it's made out of. Sandwidges mostly.

God catches big meteorites before they hit earth. So it will never happen.

sounds like a good movie idea...

we could call it 'the day the world got hit by a giant rock from outer space' or 'deep impact'

It's guaranteed that a giant meteorite will hit the earth at some stage, could be tomorrow, could be a million years. We might survive as a species but it'd be tough.

As for Ireland, seeing as the whole country grinds to a halt when there's 3 days of ice and people start smashing their heads off the ground live on RTE news just to show how angry they are.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for us.

It would bring an unknown radioactive bacteria with it and we'd all have to drink Actimel to stay alive.
