Sure who's gonna teach the little ones to follow in daddy's footsteps if he's in jail?

    Good call judge, good call.

For the good of his children.

Jesus Christ, this fella should have his kids taken away from him.

What kind of example is he going to set for them as a habitual offender.

The mind boggles - it really does.

Hard to comment without knowing the details.
Were the children I'll or was he separated?
Was he just driving the car ? What did the other two get?...etc.

    50 previous convictions!

Regardless of the circumstances and his personal life and whether he was 'just' an accomplice, he should be locked up.

They'd be doing the children a favour by taking them away from the scumbag.

Who was minding he's kids when he was out robbing houses?

Stupid judges living in there gated mansions haven't a clue what's going on in the real world!

After 50 previous convictions they should throw away the key

Throw away the key on a burglar ? sure that 'd be just a challenge to him.

    Another howler from Judge Halpin:
In relation to Facebook, I think it should be closed down. Young people spill their thoughts on it and then in one click of a button it is there permanently. It should be closed down. Facebook is a type of tool young people can use to intimidate others.

LOL, maybe he wants boards.ie to be closed down too :)

This judge previously locked up a 15-year old for a week for swearing at him. Irish judges need to be held to account by the public for this nonsense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭blacktea

Maybe they should just lock up the judge

wonder what his excuse will be the next time...."the spuds are on judge!"

People still haven't grasped that we have no were to put the criminals.

The problem isn't totally the judicial systems fault (although it's a joke),the problem is in fact we have no more space for criminals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,462 ✭✭✭✭WoollyRedHat

When may we have a justice system that for all intents and purposes serves actual justice, rather than accomadating to wanton criminals and craven individuals?

And some people have the cheek to say judges live in another universe and have no concept of reality. pfft. This shows them, eh.

If only there was enough space on our island to build more prisons to store the criminals.

Just to point out, 50 previous convictions does not mean 50 convictions that went unpunished. For all we know, this man may have 'cleared his tab' with the law.

But I'm as skeptical as you all are on that score.

Sorry, but I will do charity work myself (the only time in my life) and help with building big prison. Acctually why cant we force them to buil it for themselves? in return for shorter term, lets say?

We really need a 51 strikes law.

He was CAUGHT and prosecuted 50 previous times. god knows how many times He wasn't caught. Just sickening . People terrorised and afraid of he cat jumping from the dense outside for fear it's a violent burglar & living in fear & his gob****e judge lets him off. Lode of sh1te. Judge should be removed from his job - totally incompetent & unacceptable.

Nonsense. People who don't pay their TV license are sent to jail and there's no space for people with 50 previous convictions?

Judging by the judges sentence, it probably didn't take much to clear the tab.

If he has 50 convictions, think of all the **** he has got up to where he hasn't been caught.

There should be a minimum sentence once you go past a certain number. It's a joke tbh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,628 ✭✭✭Femme_Fatale

Does the judge just decide the sentence? Or are they bound by existing legislation? My money's on the latter.

Just imagine how much this guy has 'cost' the system - probably cost more than it would to keep him inside for a while.

I often thought that sentence time should be automatically be multiplied by the number of previous convictions. First conviction - say 6 months. 2nd for the same crime, would be 6 months, but it's 2x, so it's a year. That would ensure the disincentive to commit further convictions gets stronger. No one could ever have 50 convictions then.

a half and hour in a holding cell isn't being sent to jail really now is it?

Officially, there are very loose guidelines available through the Irish  Sentencing Information System (ISIS).

In reality, there is huge variation between the district courts in particular. Partially due to the physical, geographic isolation of district judges, partially due to a feeling of being mostly beyond reproach, and partially due to the type of people who tend to become district judges.

Is this the same judge who asked a while back a criminal who was found guilty in his court if he wanted to be sentenced now or after his celebrate's birthday in October

36 previous convictions by Jan 2011,

    http://www.herald.ie/news/courts/ive-got-a-withered-hand-claims-milkman-who-did-pressups-in-bizarre-bonfire-threat-to-garda-27971020.html
The garda said the defendant became agitated, and then started running on the spot, doing press-ups, and stood in a fighting stance, with his fists raised towards him.

Donegan denied abusing the garda, and claimed he was physically unable to do press-ups as his hand was withered after a firework exploded in it.

Judge James McDonnell found Donegan guilty of threatening and abusive behaviour.

The court heard the defendant has 36 previous convictions, mostly for public order matters.

Defence solicitor Michael Hennessy accepted that Donegan had a dreadful record but he asked a judge not to imprison him, as his wife gave birth to their ninth child, a daughter, only three days ago.

He said Donegan, a former milkman, hadn't worked for three years since the firework incident. He had just confiscated it from a child when it went off.

Someone has to do something for the good of his children because he sure as hell isn't. Taking them away might have been better though.

How nice the judges are, accomodating this man, every time it would be awkward for him to go to prison.
    FFS, enough is enough.

''Judge McDonnell ad-journed sentencing to a date in March, saying he believed the defendant's wife needed his help and support with their children.''

How about Judges believing in a criminal, in particle a career one, do the time when it suits the Court, and not the defendant?
Thats twice now, those lovely judges have let this fella act the maggot

Let's go one better, execute him. Then scatter his kids into care. After you've stopped complaining about them being on the taxpayer's dime, they can come out of wherever it is or was they were, doubtless without any kind of education or sibling bond, launch into a life of uselessness and maybe even start burgling.

This type of shit happens all the time in Newry Courthouse. I recall covering one case where a guy had over 100 previous convictions for burglary and was on a suspended sentence from the most recent case when he was caught, red handed, burgling another place. He brings his unwell, elderly Ma into court, his defence cries about how jailing him will upset the ma and the Judge (notorious for this type of shite) lets him off with another suspended sentence.

Yes! Either that or an appropriate sentence, whichever the mob decide.
Seriously though, if you ever want to kill someone, do it in Newry, you'll be out in time for tea.
