Note: I'm not looking for medical advice. I'm simply looking for an answer to what I assume is a point of fact, to settle an argument.

Are food allergies - e.g. Shellfish, wheat, etc. - always present from birth or can they develop later in life?

    Thanks.

    D.

They're usually there from birth but they can develop later in life as well.

An allergy is a different thing to an intolerance. An allergy can be life threatening, and intolerance is not.

I know intolerances can develop over time, and the brief bit I know about allergies seems to be the same. Many are there from childhood, others can arise later in life.

And in my case the opposite has been true, I had allergy induced asthma all through childhood, this is now gone.

I think allergies you are usually born with but you might develop intolerance to things down the line... im not sure you can go in to anaphylaxis over something you have usually been ok with if you get me?

Isnt it true that allergies can increase in severity with each exposure?

Allergies to things like nuts, fish, pollen or whatever are generally there from birth as far as I remember. Intolerances to things like gluten or lactose can develop at any age, I was only diagnosed coeliac at 15.
