Here is a post i started about the Halfords TDF
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=85734382

Had a quick look at the bike in Eurotrek. Can't tell if its better but one thing i know i don't like my self is that is has 3 chain rings at the top T/30x42x52, but that is only a small thing. It looks like a nice bike and comes in 56cm or 59cm. Someone with better knowledge about bike parts might be able to chip in.

I'm looking into getting my first road bike and I came across the Eurotrek TDF road bike

    http://eurocycles.com/ie/product/eurotrek/tdf-road-bike

which is supposedly down from €600 to €300.

How does this compare to similar priced bikes like the Carrerra TDF

    http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_810707_langId_-1_categoryId_212536

    Etc.

I am using the bike to work scheme to get 33% off also. My budget is about €200-300

I will be using the bike for commuting about 8-10 miles a day

    Cons:

    1. It's fugly and cyclists are a Peacockish bunch, you might tell yourself now that you won't care, but you will.

    2. It's old 8 speed Sora, complete with thumb shifters and relies on the triple mech at the front to give it any sort of range, which means big jumps in gearing, plus it has an awful invention called thumbshifters which for those who don't have freakishly elongated prehensile thumbs means it's very hard to change gears when in the drops.

    3. It looks heavy, even by beater standards and probably not that much fun to ride.

    Pros:

It is cheap, and for commuting it's probably serviceable.

Verdict: Don't waste your BTW scheme on a beater, buy a cheap bike now if you must but remember a less pleasant riding experience is likely to put you off cycling whereas a nice fun responsive bike is likely to propel you onto bigger challenges in the saddle. These halls are littered with tales of regret from people like myself who used their bike to work scheme before they knew a thing about cycling and ended up stuck with their safe (sometimes crappy) choice for years until they could muster up the cash for the bike they realised they really wanted.

Plus, it's ugly. Buy an older steel framed roadbike from Rothar, take care of it and it will be way more fun for the same price as this monstrosity.

Looks good value to me at that price so long as the size is correct for you, if the size isn't right then try the one in Halfords. As a starter bike that one is very nice in my opinion and with the 33% off its even better.
