Very briefly - If you're getting into a cab in Dublin (or other Irish town), can the driver turn down your requested destination.

E.g. Dublin city centre 23:30 Friday.
    Taxi Driver -Where to ?
Dood - Arse end of Athlone.
    Taxi Driver - Nope.
    Dood - but..
Taxi driver - please leave the area.
    Dood - yeah but..
Taxi Driver - please leave the area.
    Dood - Look I just nee ...
Taxi Driver - please leave the area.

    Taxi leaves.

(or even somewhere more reasonable - maybe Wicklow)

    Er, it's his taxi.

He can refuse even if you offer to pay him double while giving him a reach around whistling Dixie and slapping his thigh.

    Yes, of course.

It's not public transport like a bus driver refusing to drive his route.

What's going on in AH tonight?

Wouldn't the driver need a separate licence for Dublin and whatever county Athlone is in? Lot of hassle.

Edit. Just noticed the post count + join date + stupid question = troll.

    Took the bait. :o

Last weekend I tried the first cab in a rank on Dame St. I was going to Kilmainham and the driver asked me to move on and try another cab. Next guy took me no problem. Maybe not worth the money for shortish journey?

Anyone here ever had it happen ?

Order a delivery of pizza to your house and hop in with the delivery driver.

    Close.

I jumped into a taxi on the quays one night driven by an African gentleman.

' Take me home sir' I said. 3 days later I was eating dinner with his family in Abuja.

I doubt a pizza guy in dublin would deliver to athlone either :-)

Why the ninja edit to change Freetown to Abuja? :)

    All here OP

    http://www.transportforireland.ie/faq/taxi/

Taxi can refuse a fare over 30km, or any fare at all if they don't like the cut of your jib.

I was going to write Lagos, but then couldn't decide if it was in nigeria or in the Algarve.

I think it's in both though now.

And .... One throw of poop at you.

Ok looking like a 'yes'. I guess its the old offer and acceptance thing, I just thought there might be red tape, or regulations to complicate it.

Nope, you can only tout for business in the area which you have a permit for, but you can bring that passenger anywhere

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,318 ✭✭✭✭Menas

Yup, and if you want the taxi to take you outside his Permit area then you can negotiate a fixed off meter fee with him. Or something.

I've often gotten taxis to Wicklow, maybe they don't like Athlone :P Would ya not be better off hosteling for the night instead?! Say that's some fierce fare!

They only need to be licensed for the area that they do the pickup in. They could take someone from Dublin to Athlone, but they couldn't then pick someone up in Athlone (unless they're also licensed there).

But a driver isn't allowed refuse a fare at Dublin airport isn't that right?

Otherwise they can have their airport permit taken away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,180 ✭✭✭EyeSight

a poster in a previous thread stated that they have to take you as long as it's not X miles away.
In practice this doesn't happen and makes me angry. My Girlfriend live in a dodgey area and taxis always refuse to take her home from the city center as it's too short(8-10 euro journey) so she has to walk some nights

He didn't like the look of you. He drives all the way out there and you do a runner in an area that he doesn't know. Cash on the dash would have made it a different tale.

    you sure???

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/public_transport/duties_of_drivers_of_spsv_in_ire.html :

Right to refuse a passenger: Drivers have the right to refuse to take a fare from you if you are unable to prove that you can pay the fare.

They cannot unreasonably refuse to take you up to a distance of 30 kilometres. They may, however, refuse to take you any further.

EDIT: It doesn't say: "they are allowed to refuse you if your mama's ugly."

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 2,159 Mod ✭✭✭✭Oink

Or to quote from your link:

"A taxi driver may reasonably refuse:
    • To undertake journeys of more than 30km;
    • To allow passengers to consume food or drink in the vehicle;
    • To carry, or continue to carry, passengers who are acting in a disorderly, abusive or offensive manner;
    • To carry, or continue to carry, passengers who are likely to soil or damage the vehicle."
In fairness, your face may be offensive so maybe then they'd have a case.

Yep, they can refuse anyone they don't feel comfortable taking. Refusing short journeys just because they are short journeys is idiotic and illegal though, and should be reported.

If I were a taxi driver I'd spend more of my time kicking other drivers up the hole than actually working. Luckily, I'm not one. :)

I don't think that's what the law says... The following does not mean "if you are not comfortable with them". If you're sober and polite, they can't just tell you to feck off:
"To carry, or continue to carry, passengers who are acting in a disorderly, abusive or offensive manner; To carry, or continue to carry, passengers who are likely to soil or damage the vehicle"

I'd imagine sober and polite very rarely are refused in taxis, and if they are, the driver is wrong. :)

Could she tell them she's going about twice as far and then suddenly change her mind half way through the journey?

They can refuse at the airport if the fare is over 30KM away. The majority of refusals moaning are normally for jobs to places like Santry.

As a taxi driver that only picks up young asian women, i think it depends on personal preference

I'd say the women you're into would be hard to pick up without a fork-lift tbh.
