Taking up the hem on a kilt

Has anyone attempted to take up the hem of a kilt? I wouldn't be an expert on sewing but I was thinking of taking up my daughter's school kilt as it is very long. The pleats are putting me off a bit. I was advised to take the waist band off, cut a piece off and the reattach it. That is a no no for me. I can take up curtains but..... waist bands to be reattached .... not for me. Any advice of other people's experiences would be great.:)

I would def go in by the waistband, much easier.

If you do the bottom and you are off, every pleat could sit crooked!

Can you put up a pic? How much room is there before the pleats to make an adjustment?

A bigger difference between the waist and hips will also make a difference (sorry to comment on your daughters shape!)

Yikes thanks for your advice and no problem with the comments, it's all very helpful. I think I may have to get it done by someone who actually knows how to sew. Thanks

Agree with wmpdd3, definitely a waistband job!

If you absolutely have to take it up from the hem, don't try to turn a double hem, the edge needs to be overlocked and a single, small (max 1cm) hem turned. Press all the pleats out around the edge - get rid of the pleats for about a few centimeters - turn up the hem, stitch with small stitches then carefully press the pleats back in. Not easy - waistband easier!
