Extra Income while on Maternity Leave

Sorry, I don't know if this is in the correct forum.

I am due to go on Maternity Leave at end of this year. My company pays me my full salary for the duration of the leave.

The opportunity has presented itself for me to lecture part time in my relevant discipline from Jan of next year. It will be maybe one lecture, one tutorial per week. I don't know the exact nature of the hours yet but suffice to say it will be very part time.

Apart from the fact that I am probably mad to consider this with a newborn baby, is it legal for me to get extra employment while my employer pays me to be on maternity leave?
To be honest it is not really the financial aspect that is enticing me to the lecturing. I have a huge interest in getting into this area of work and having time off from my full time job allows me to dabble in it, get experience and a feel for it to see if I like it.

Would love some advice. Thanks a million

No, you cannot engage in paid work whilst on maternity leave - paid maternity leave or otherwise.

As far as you employer goes, they might agree to allow you to work on an ad hoc basis provided that whatever you earn was deducted from the payment they give you. This would be unusual however and purely a matter for negotiation between you both.

    However,
, the most important element of this is that your maternity benefit will stop if you engage in paid work - either back with your original employer or another employer:
    Disqualification from Maternity Benefit
You can do voluntary work, public representative work (for example, a councillor or TD) and courses of education while you are getting Maternity Benefit. However, your payment will be stopped if you engage in insurable (paid) employment

Is there any way you could do the lecturing on a voluntary basis and just get a payment for 'expenses' rather than a wage, given that your main desire to undertake the lecturing is to gain experience rather than to earn extra income?
