    Hello All,

Which Dublin car auction company is the best to go with if you are looking for something cheap, €2-3K?

    Thanks

Would a private sale and getting a mechanic to look over it not be a better idea?
At least you can take it out fro a test drive etc.

thanks scortho, I have been to a car auction before with a mate before who was buying a car. I know it can be hit and miss but the prices seem to be very good (probably for this reason), I might be prepared to risk it.

You'd want your head checked buying a €2k car in an auction IMO.

The only kind of cars in that price range that end up at an auction are ones which cannot be sold via other means for whatever reason.

Unless you have a specific car you're after and are prepared for some unforseen work, I'd leave the auction cars alone......

I'd be interested if you could expand on the specifics of what you're looking for at the auction.

Thanks guys for the feedback, it would seem that i'd be better off looking elsewhere. I have no specifics really, I was just wondering if it would be better value. I went with a mate who was buying a car this way a few years back and it seemed to work out OK for him, so I was just looking for feedback. I knwo it's a gamble but buying any car is a gamble in my opinion. cheers

Private sale. Especially a big engined car (apparently 2 L and over is big engined in ireland) on the old tax system.

It can be done, but you have to be very careful, and theres always a risk. Check if the auction company list whether cars are reposessed, as banks tend to get rid of cars at these things.

It was my understanding that a lot of these cars were repossessed and so made me think that they may be there for legitimate reasons as opposed to more cynical ones, again it's a gamble.

Most €2k cars will either be unwanted trade ins entered by garages who want rid or else heaps of sh1te entered by private individuals who can't shift them by normal means.

There's very few cars that are repossesed that sell for 2k at auction.
A car that sells for 2k will be around 10 years old. At that age very few would have finance owing.

Fair point scortho! I will go the normal route then. thanks

This is correct, OP, I failed to take your budget into account

If it was that easy we'd all be going to Auctions!

What type of car are you after?

People here are pretty helpful, and will throw up a few suitable links, if you let us know your criteria.

i'd be looking for an A3, similar to one I have now but preferably one that works!

year, budget, spec, mileage done per year and diesel or petrol?

    Alternatively whats wrong with yours?

i put up a seperate thread today detailing the issues with my current car.

I am not that interested in the spec to be honest, my criteria are budget and reliability.

Take your car to George Dalton, or at least speak to him before you do anything. He's a VAG specialist, and highly recommended on multiple forums.

    what does VAG stand for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42 templeville

no worries - just googled it!

As you said it's a gamble but an auction especially in the price range you are looking at is a big gamble and it would appear your friend got lucky.

Honestly if you think about it, cars in that price range that go through auctions are usually there because they couldn't be sold either on a forecourt or privately and there is a reason for that. Of course there maybe exceptions but they are few and far between and it's a lottery.

I'm sorry to lower the tone but I always snigger when I see that phrase.

And I always pronounce it VaJ rather than Va*hard*g:D

I would love to see you buy a good car at auction for €2k. There are good cars out there at that price but they are few and far between.

    And this is 100% true.

Caveat: I do not know this man from Adam, apart from what I have seen on the internet, or heard from friends, but apart from that I believe he stands's over his warranty's, rather than selling some sh1the from mapfre, or whatever they're called.

However he is not the cheapest:pac:

The problem is today everyone wants the cheapest car with bumper to bumper warranty on something from donedeal, If you spot a 08 Octavia for 3 grand less on donedeal than George's price there is a reason for that.

I am lucky in that a couple of my best friends are mechanics so anytime I have got into trouble with a car they have been there for me.

Howevere not everyone is in the same position as me. You have to weigh up price v's quality
