How can new young professionals to the city meet new people?

    Hi all,

I know down through the years 'blow ins' to Limerick have posed this kind of question on here, hopefully some are still active on Boards and could part with their wisdom?

A colleague of mine has arrived in Limerick with his new job, he is American (but most recently worked in Brussels). In Brussels there were lots of clubs/societies for young people - but he can't find any here.

He was asking me about his idea of setting up a social group for young people (post college - late thirties), but I thought I'd ask on here if there are similar groups or how others have mingled in the past.

Any replies would be greatly appreciated, thank you! :)

Brussels V Limerick! He's in for a shock!

I know a lot of mid to late thirties folk would be into running, triathlons, 10ks etc. surfing and all that.

The old reliable is the pub in Limerick, but would steer clear of drunken social scenes...

Prospecting for the Road Tramps. That'll get him out-and-about.

Tell him to go down to The Blind Pig as soon as he finishes work when he isn't on the next day.

Maybe try get a few people in work together to form either a 6-a-side soccer team, or a tag rugby team! Could try get your boss to sponsor it but that'd be hard these days :)

Not only do you get to know people in your own workplace better, but you also make friends with people on other teams and referees etc!

    Best of luck!

The pints in that pub are for savouring. Great selection to choose from. Nobody ever said they had to drink too many of them. ;)

Shur any time I go to the Blind Pig, the punters are in a drunken stupor! ;)

There is a decent enough selection of Belgian beer, which I think is why the pig was suggested.

Volunteer in something he is interested in?

He could use meetup.com, there are a few meetups available in the area.

The most relevant and generic answer would be this group:
    http://www.meetup.com/New-and-Not-so-New-in-Limerick-Meetup-Group/

But there are other groups for more specialised interests that might suit him.

I saw this too late to mention the Volunteer Fair at City Hall this past Saturday.

But Volunteer Limerick has posts open all of the time, and getting onto a board or committee is a great way to start networking.

There is also the running club that meets Monday evenings at the Treaty Stone for a jog & a pint at the Curragower. Very social, friendly types.

And the new coffee shop on the corner of O'Connell & Mallow Streets is open until 8pm, so we have a non-alcoholic (or pre-alcoholic, depending on your post-8pm plans) social spot for evenings.

A jog from the Treaty Stone to the Curragower for pints! :pac: sounds like my kind of running group.

Just wondering if you've heard of Limerick Macra? There is a very active club based in Limerick City.
They're a nice bunch and there's a whole mix of sports and social involved that might suit?

limerickmacra@gmail.com if you want to find out about them or use the magic of facebook:P.
