I have a 2004 Volvo s40 1.8 petrol. It was driving fine but then lost power and the engine management light came on. It drives fine at low revs but when you try to put the throttle down even half way it sounds like the air box is blocked and has no power atal. I don't have the money to try a process of elimination on it and try lots of stuff so was wondering if anybody could help me please.

Sounds like it's in limp mode.

Is it the old model S40 or the newer model S40, both were sold in 2004?

If you don't want to spend money on replacing parts through guess work then you really need to get it plugged into a diagnostic computer. When the car goes into limp home mode the car's computer detects a problem so to prevent further damage it drives on limited power until the issue is addressed or the problem gets worse. Any faults will be recorded on the car's ECU or computer and can be read by a garage that has the proper diagnostic equipment. These fault codes will give an indication as to where the problem may be.

As said, ring a local garage and arrange to have the fault codes read. The cost for that is usually around 40/50. Ring more than one and go with the cheapest.

If you can, find some one with a Vida/Dice (dealer level diagnostic equipment)
Generic fault readers will only give vague codes.
