Help Identifying Dog Breed

The weekend I was at the local beach and this lovely dog that lived in a house beside it came over to play.

He was such a pet :) But I have no idea what kind of dog he was. He was a large dog, the size of a Labrador or so. Instead of regular fur he had that kinda wool like fleece you see on a Bichon Frise the kind that doesn't shed and needs to be groomed instead.

He also had a very short tail, terrier like.

    Any ideas?

    Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier?
Or possibly, an untrimmed Irish Terrier?
Less likely as their tails are not docked, one of the poodle xbreeds, labradoodle, goldendoodle, there are even wheatendoodles!

He kinda looked like one of those terriers bit they seem on the smallish size compared to him. When I say large I mean large, slightly bigger than a sheepdog or something! It struck me cause I'd never seen the likes.

One other fact that may help, his ears. The were very long and floppy.

Would it possibly have been an Irish water spaniel with his tail tucked in?? The bottom of their tail isn't hairy, it's like a little whip but the top is curly haired like the rest of the body so may give the impression of a short tail.

It was never a standard poodle, no? They're big dogs, and come in different colors!

Thanks for all the posts! :)

I had thought it may be the Bouvier de Flanders, but the ears didn't see long enough.

But I'm 99% sure it's the Spinone like above. He had been groomed from the neck down and his head looked exactly like that fellow in the picture. Now the only question is after grooming would a Spinones hair have an almost wooly look to it?

Depends on the groomer! seen alot just shaved off

I wouldn't have described the Spinone coat as woolly at all, it's fairly coarse, wirey and reasonably straight.
However, I'm happy for our resident Spinone expert to correct me! Over to you knine!

Bit more wirey than woolly allright, did you actually pet him OP or were you just guessing on the texture?

I petted him! So much so he climbed into the car on top of me :p

To answer another posters question, he was mostly white, but had a spot or two of black.

I suppose though it could have been the fact that his coat was cut so short it appeared wooly to me at the time. Cause his face had hair that was straight so his overall all coat hair would be straight. It was probably just how I viewed the really tight groom of his coat at the time.

That certainly sounds like a Spinone to me anyway!

A Spinone would generally be considerably bigger then a labrador. They would have a very large nose & long ears with a roof like shape to their skull. They should never have a wooly coat but I have seen some spayed bitches with wooly coats especially if their coats are not stripped out.
