Hulu has the past seasons for free, but not the current one yet. Hopefully soon

Try another VPN? Thats the best option I can think of.

Is there a way of checking speeds on the service you tried?

is the RTE player offering it slightly later - to users outside of IE ?

Which VPN were you using? I've been using ExPat Shield for a couple of months ($5/mo) and it works okay except that you cant pick your location as Ireland. Just US, UK, Aus and Japan.

There are others that provide an Irish ip though. And I want one.

Rte iPlayer for outside Ireland is very restricted, just news, and a few selected other programmes but not much.

Hulu have season 1,2 and 3 - http://www.hulu.com/search?q=love+hate (as Silja pointed out)

Also, i'm not 100% on this, but i think unblock-us has an Irish VPN. It does allow Irish Netflix in Netflix Region Picker.
You can find out, as it's free for a week.
    $4.99 (~€3.70) Per Month after.

It does, I used Unblock and it works.

Hmmm. I wasnt impressed with unblock-us. I got a little lost after the fourth or fifth step in the video about how to change my dns(?) settings. And all the warnings about what not to change were intimidating.

And there was no instructions about whether you need to change the settings back again if you dont want to use the service? or after you've finished using it.

At least ex-pat shield is easy to use. Turn it on, pick a country and off you go. And once you're done you switch it off. You dont have to delve into your computer settings and alter IP addresses, etc.

    I found this one: http://www.purevpn.com/

$50 a year and it supports 19 countries incl. Ireland.

Unblock-us does that because it installs nothing. They can also use it as a marketing point.
(Hotspot) Expat pro is around if you look, without ads or any malware. I'd guess that there is also an installer version of unblock-us if you email them.
There are thousands offering the same service.

PureVPN has mixed reviews (as do many VPN providers/servers). Before you pay for the year it's worth reading reviews and doing a background check if possible. Also well worth it (imo) to get a week or more free trial, before you pay anything. What OS's does it work on, what are it's speed like etc..

I have never used PureVPN before, but i have heard of them for a while, I just can't remember if it was good, bad or because the had a special offer on.

    PureVPN trial download - http://vpncreative.net/vpn-providers/pure-vpn/

loads of reviews here - https://www.bestvpn.com/

I'm using expat shield elite ($5/mo) right now and its working well except for the lack of Ireland. They charge by the month too so I can bail at any time. Nice easy UI, and a quick setup.

And its really only needed for Bbc iplayer because they only block access to Bbc so you can get itv and channel4 with the free expat shield.

But I'm happy to pay a little more for some ease and speed so I may well try purevpn.

How easy is it to use? I may give it a try.

There have been some free alternatives but tbh a lot of them require a fair amount of tweaking and I just dont have the patience. I'd rather pay a little and have an easy to use UI.

This is similar, and i use it a lot, but wasn't sure if it would work in the States for Ireland - https://mediahint.com/so i didn't mention it.

This is another option at $5 a month. They have a vpn service but also something called smart dns which works great as it doesn't route traffic through a vpn. I've been using it for a couple of years https://www.overplay.net/blog/overplay-smartdns
