Maynooth to Sandyford

    Hey all,

So I may be moving in the next few months and one of the options is Maynooth. Any idea how long it'd take me to drive in from there to Sandyford in the mornings?

I'm normally in for about half 7/8am as it is so an early start doesn't bother me. Also, how long on the way back if leaving the office around half 4?

I'm guessing the fastest route would just be the M4 to the M50 and down to Sandyford, but any other suggestions?

    Cheers!

About 40 mins is what it takes me. Traffic in Maynooth is shocking at all times. So try not to have to go through Maynooth if you can. Getting into the Sanyford Inds Estate is typically ok in the morning, but getting out isn't so great in the evening. So it'll take longer to go home. Any crashes on the m50, bad weather etc, friday traffic make the m50 a pain and the n4 interchange can be packed for instance going to sligo etc.

Traffic in Maynooth is very slow moving at all times of the day since KCC went mad with traffic lights during the boom. They don't trust motorists to navigate any sort of a junction in Maynooth at all it seems.

Moral of the story is live as close to the motorway as possible, which will unfortunately put you away from the town centre where everything is.

I used to work in Sandyford up to 5 years ago and the commute used to take 30-40min in the morning. I live motorway side which helps as your not getting caught in the village centre.

At those times, 40 minutes is about right, maybe a bit less. These days, if I'm leaving Maynooth at 7.30, it can take nearly an hour to get to my desk. So if you can get on the road earlier and leave earlier, all the better.

Lately, traffic on the route is noticeably worse than it has been for some time (I have been driving the route for five years now), with no obvious explanation other than volumes.

Cheers for the replies so far guys :) Any thoughts on Lyreen Manor? Seems close enough to the motorway but would its proximity to the college be an issue? - I like a quiet life when I get home!

    Thanks again all

Lyreen Manor is right in the centre of Maynooth, so not necessarily the most convenient place for getting on the motorway, as you're actually the opposite side of the main street from it. It would still be better than much of the Moyglare direction, but anything on the Straffan Road would be closer to the M4.

At the time of day you're talking about you'd likely be ok to get through the town on the way to work though. It could be a bit jammed up on the way home though, as you'd have to work your way right back into the middle of the town.

It seems like a mad commute if it is avoidable. :)

If there is a problem on the M50 between Tallaght and Palmerston, you could use the Tallaght Bypass (or Embankment Road) and the Outer Ring Road. Obviously avoid Newlands Cross.

Between Firhouse and Sandyford there is the Green Route. Pick and choose between junction 13 and 14 at Sandyford. However, in the absence of problems, the M50 is always likely to be faster.

Cheers for that Victor (and everyone else). Actually the commute itself doesn't bother me as I enjoy driving and have a very comfortable suitable car for the trip :)

I'm also in a role where I can be flexible with hours and even work from home if I wanted, so I'm not tied to a specific start/end time so that'll help.

I used to drive in from Cavan to Fairview for a year and could do it most days in just over an hour so 40 mins-ish is grand from my point of view. :)

Just to be aware people seem to forget how to drive in the rain. Even this morning I was driving over the motorway bridge of the M4 at Maynooth and traffic was at a standstill.

Celbridge might be another option OP. I prefer Maynooth as a town but its hard to get a decent property there. Plus its closer to Sandyford and you can skip out a bit of the motorway if there's a crash by going out past Weston airfield. Best of luck with the move wherever you decide.

There was a crash this morning on the N4 and traffic was backed up as far as Maynooth, which is probably why it was worse than usual.

Bad as it has been lately, this morning was worse than it has been for a long time. Collision at the Palmerstown lights, plus what might have been another one at Leixlip and it well and truly fubared everything.

There are several alternative routes available from Maynooth to Sandyford if things go wrong on the M4 or the M50, but to be honest, any of the ring road routes are littered with traffic lights and school traffic and more often than not won't save time. You might get to move more often however.

Personally, I think people are overstating the issue of getting through Maynooth to the M4 - the lights are a pain, but traffic isn't really an issue before 8am. Evenings are worse.
