No Social Welfare Payment since March

Just made aware of a Family members situation-basically,person worked physically as a general operative in a manual job in a factory for over 20 years. Over time an injury developed which grew more and more painful especially after work. Eventually went to Doctor, was signed off tablets physiotherapy, consultant and eventually received surgery. So on sick leave for over a year or so.

Social welfare sick benefit was cut off in March. We believe it was due to the casual nature of local GPs letter which made the ailment sound trivial and I suppose it was seen by welfare assessor as not serious enough to stop work. But obviously it is serious as surgery was required and now in the process of recuperation. (doc estimated 3mths required)

No Social Welfare Payment since March. So appealed and requested letter from consultant and it is still quiet vague-stating he had surgery and what the surgery was!

Spouse works so they are struggling on but not for much longer, just wanted some thoughts?
It is upsetting having worked your whole life and now the body is worn down and needs time to recover and there is no help?
How can you be refused sick benefit when awaiting an operation recommended by your doctor?

I'd reccomend the INOU information 018560088 - they are really good at social welfare appeals

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    By the way

You get illness benefit for 2 years only - when the 2 years are up you should if you are still imcapacitated apply for disability allowance of it is more long term invalidity pension
