UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields

    This Wednesday.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_Fight_Night:_Maia_vs._Shields

Welterweight Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields
Welterweight Erick Silva vs. Dong Hyun Kim
Light Heavyweight Thiago Silva vs. Matt Hamill
Light Heavyweight Fabio Maldonado vs. Joey Beltran
Welterweight Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Pierce
Bantamweight Raphael Assunção vs. T.J. Dillashaw

    Preliminary card
Welterweight Ildemar Alcantara vs. Igor Araujo
Welterweight Yan Cabral vs. David Mitchell
Flyweight Iliarde Santos vs. Chris Cariaso
Lightweight Allan Patrick vs. Garett Whiteley

For fans of brawls Maldonado vs. Beltran has violence written all over it. To stoke the fires further then the loser of this bout could very well be getting his P45.

The Assunção vs. Dillashaw is very important to the BW division. Both are on a blazing streak and a win could propel either into title contention.

I'm sure Mike Pierce is still fuming that he's on a four fight win streak and he's pitted against someone on a two fight skid. Palhares is still quite a threat to most in any division but I believe this could be his last chance saloon. He's facing a renowned grinder in Pierce who is out to show he belongs in bigger cards. Add to that a behemoth like Palhares moving to WW so his gas tank could dwindle quickly.

Thiago Silva has to avoid the grinding wrestling of Hamill to set up those violent hands. Frankly I don't see how Thiago is not cut if he loses. If he does indeed succumb to The Hammer then Silva will be 2-4-0-2 in 8 fights. I'm just praying he can win, lose or draw without anything suspect in his system.

Silva vs. Kim is going to be an extremely fast paced grapple fest. Both are coming in with wins after losses from high profile fighters so a win for either is important if they are looking to reach the upper echelons of their respective divisions.

Maia vs. Shields is going to be either a spectacular feast for grappling fans as Shields uses his magnificent bag of grappling skills to outwit the wizardry of Maia's BJJ or it's going to snorefest as Shields pushes Maia against the cage to nullify any sub attempt. I have to be fair though, Maia has shown much improved stand up in his last few fights so we might see a shock KO.

I was a little surprised when this main event was made. I think Maia will win and I hope to christ it doesnt last 5 rounds.

We also have 2 other potential borefests, so I am hoping we see an aggressive Thiago Silva knockout Hamill and I hope Erik Silva doesnt choke and does the same to Dong Hyun Kim.

Looking forward to T.J. Dillashaw, he is on quite the run at the moment

Looks like its one of those cards where there's money to be made. Are odds out yet?

Paddy Power has the following odds so far. Good bet there with Dong Hyum Kim if you ask me. Kim has convincingly beaten far better opponents than Silva.

    Fabio Maldonado 8/13 v Joey Beltran 5/4
    Raphael Assuncao 15/8 v T.J. Dillashaw 2/5
    Mike Pierce 1/3 v Rousimar Palhares 9/4
    Matt Hamill 12/5 v Thiago Silva 3/10
Dong Hyun Kim 9/4 v Erick Silva 1/3
    Demian Maia 1/3 v Jake Shields 9/4

Paul Harris & Matt Hamill look punt worthy to me!

Also, I might have a little punt on Shields! Not because I want him to win, but because this fight is hardly gonna be fireworks! Any added interest will be good!

Matt Hamill's longtime coach (who learned sign language to communicate with him) said publicly that Matt doesnt have "that beast" inside him anymore and he wont be apart of this and thinks Matt should have stayed retired

That and his limitations as a fighter are enough to put me off betting on him against Silva

True, but I'll win my bet when Thiago gets caught taking tokes of a joint between rounds and gets DQ'd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,659 ✭✭✭unknown13

As per usual when Palhares fights. I hope he gets destroyed and I actually hope this time he will be released, if Pierce beats him.

Am I the only one who wants to see this ME?
We heard so much hype about Jake Shields' "American JiuJitsu", but I can't say I've seen it. His stand up is poor, and it also what I remember most from his fights.
Maia will take this one down promptly imo.

Word of warning, if Thiago wins but the result is later overturned, any bets on the might might not be overturned.

I'd say Kim, Palhares and Shields are worth a bet.

Hopefully Maia will be able to move on the feet and use trips effectively from the clinch. Shields seems like a nice guy but he really makes fights boring. I reckon he gets cut if he loses.

Silly fight for the UFC IMO, if shields wins, which wouldn't be too surprising, then an exciting contender is knocked out of contention by someone who nobody ever wants to see fight for the belt again.

    Bets wont be overturned.

I had a pick that was later over turned and I e-mailed chancing my arm. No dice

    COME ON THE HAMMER!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,344 ✭✭✭p to the e

Palhares looked relieved to have made weight. I don't think I've ever seen a bigger WW.

Have'nt seen an event live since BT came in. Downloading it the next day is just not the same:/.

Anyways hope Maia Pierce and Erik Silva pick up the wins.

Maia and Shields has borefest written all over it but hopefully i'm wrong. Really looking forward to Maldonado and Beltran, that is going to be a war, both able to absorb a lot of punishment.
My money will be on a paul harris and dong hyun kim double

I'm with you on Kim but Palhares has shown himself to give up in fights, which is pretty much the opposite of Mike Pierce.

Pierce is the very definition of a hard nosed wrestler.

Pierce v maja would have been much better a match up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,961 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

Gonna put a small flyer on Dong over Silva, hes been dominating recently with 30-25's, 30-26's, and has great heavy top control, only lost to Condit (maia was an injury) i think its a matter of whether he can get an first round takedown, if he can i think he wins, odds are good which might be influencing me ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,961 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

took maia, mold and thiago silva in a treble
works out just shy of 2/1

    cant wait for mold/beltran fight

one stand out price for me is for the silva kim fight to
go to a decison at 6/4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,961 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

beltran mold fight of the night at 4s ladbrokes
    a few euro on that
cant see how maia shields can be 5/2
Ill stop betting on mma forever if jakes shields wins
a fight of the night bonus

I think Bisping is disgusted that yer man turned up for work in a tshirt. Bisping however is wearing his work clothes. Something like that. Terrible ad in my opinion.

Scumbag holding onto the leg for that long

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,369 ✭✭✭the incredible pudding

Jesus, you'd swear Palhares wants to actually tear the leg off and bring it home as a trophy or something. He held that way too long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Maldonado is gonna be cut if he doesn't start doing something. Awful performance.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 397 ✭✭welkin

WTF, Thiago could have finished him there and he was just messing.

He might need the finish he might have lost the first two

Cheers, I only had text reports earlier, and most sites were saying footlock.
Thought I'd double check as heel hook is his go to sub.

What a K.O from Kim,could have went either way that exchange absolute peach of a shot 2/1 to win was too big a price sick I didnt bet it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Stream skipped a bit and I almost missed that one.
A better stream might be handy for whatever sick sub Maia tries to murder Shields with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

    Close fight as expected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Could easily come down to this round, 2-2 is reasonable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Suppose Maia will get the decision, not much in it alright though.

edit - wow he didnt, no one could complain either way though.

My stream was jerky enough that I could say for sure who deserved it

Despite being the only submission finish, Palhares wasn't awarded a sub of the night bonus, due to unsportsmanlike like conduct.

But Kim's KO wasnt viewed unsportsmanlike and he landed a massive hammer fist with Silva out cold on the canvas.......are they not similar things? (Apart from the damage the submission might cause)

Didn't get to see the fights yet but Palhares has been known to do that. If I recall rightly that'd be the third time he held a submission (a lot) longer than he should have.

    Not even remotely similar.
Kim didn't know Silva would go down, and when he did he can't afford to see if he's out or just dropped, he has to just react without thinking. He can't assume that Silva is out and will stay out, people have came to when they hit the mat.
Importantly he can't be sure the ref will stop it.

Palhares knew he us going for a heel hook. Unlike a KO, he's aware a tap could be coming. I don't expect anybody to release a sub the instant somebody taps, in the moment you genuinely don't always feel or hear the tap straight away - but there is a point where its impossible to miss it.

I understand what your saying but it happens a lot & in even more obvious circumstances

Rampage KO's Wandelei, he's completly out on the mat, hits him 3 more times including when the refs pulling him off but still gets KO of the night

Henderson does the same to Bisping, again he's as good as dead on the ground & Hendo follows up with another.....gets KO of the night & of the year

Now, I think what Palhares did was a scumbag thing to do, having torn my knee multiple times I hate seen things like that but I just think it's a bit contradictory by the UFC.......both are "unsportsmanlike behaviour" are they not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

The follow up strike happens over a much shorter timeframe than the submission.

Palhares has done it way too many times inside and outside the UFC. You can suspend him or dock his bonus or whatever you want but he'll do it again anyway, something not right in his head.
