If their stock settings are as conservative as last gen and they overclock just as well then amd are on to a winner again this gen.

'New' cards not part of the never settle games bundle....

Buy a r9-880x no free games.

Buy a 7970 (same card) you get 3 free games. And the 7970 are selling below €300 at as well....

It is just a rebrand. Looks like I am staying with my gtx 680 for a little bit longer.

So it's basically a rebadged 7970. Both Nvidia and Amd have done that this gen. When is the last time they did this?

I skipped a good few gens and didn't really follow hardware between my 4870x2, which I bought second hand about 2 years after it's release, and the 7970 but I'm pretty sure every gen in between offered significant power upgrades.

Pretty disappointing but on the other hand I'm happy my 7970 is still going to sit near the top of the tree in graphics performance.

Good thing out of this, 7970 prices ought to plummet and I'd be grabbing a 2nd one cheap...! :D

other than the 600 -> 700 series by nvidia the 8800gtx -> 9800gtx back 4/5 years ago for Nvidia

cant remember if/when AMD/ATI did a full line rebadge their super low end has been rebadged 3/4 times now

Tbf to AMD and Nvidia, it doesnt make commerial sense to release completely new line up every year.

it makes much more sense to work on your architecture use the best chips produced in the Tier 1 line-up. Move last years Tier 1 line-up as tier 2 and so on

It moves product that wouldnt have been sold it doesnt have the same yield issues 3/6 new chips would have and it gives a lot of short term R&D (i.e reasearch that would only apply to one chip) a bit more of a justification

It might be a good sign, which says that we got already more power then we need. In fairness some cards like 670 7950/7970 got to a nice price point and are very beefy. Anyone with these cards will enjoy 1080p gaming for quite long. Those are not stupidly overpriced at the moment too.

I am tempted to get second 680 and leter on 1440p. Thing is on adverts people still try to sell their 680 second for the same price they go brand new... Some poeple need reality check. I payed 550eu for my 680, but that does not mean its value is still the same...

That's cheaper than the €316 I paid for last week [the Gigabyte's GHz Edition] :o

I have the Sapphire dual-x. Can't complain. It's a beast of an overclocker.

I am reminded of this, so I guess I'll stick with my 7850 2GB then?, I did like the look of the R9 270X though:rolleyes:

    Oo er...

Them benchmarks, the 7970 GHz Edition beats the the 280x - guess I'll be purchasing that 2nd one after all ;)

When the heck will the 290's benchmarking be shown?! :(

NDA lifts on the 15th of this month. Benchies should be out then.

They say the 270x isn't worth getting over a 7870 since its only a little better performing, but costs ~30 dollars more. Surely the introduction of mantle alone would make it worth that 30 dollars more? Even if it won't be of benefit for a couple of months, until BF4 uses it.

Aren't all o the 7000 series cards based on the GCN Architecture as well so they should also support mantle?

It remains to be seen how good mantle actually is as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,698 ✭✭✭Gumbi

280xs are edging out ghz editions barely from what I've seen. Either way, whichever is cheaper is the better option. Asus tops were going for 224 pounds on overclockers recently, there's not a better buy in that range, that card will outperform a 770 when overclocked.

The NDA is lifting within a week, we should be seeing reviews very soon on the 290s/290xs.

I'm not sure tbh, from their press releases it sounded to me like only the new cards would have mantle, whether by choice or design restrictions.

I'm gona be getting either the 270x or 7870 in a couple of weeks and I wouldn't want to choose the 7870 for the sake of 30 euro and miss out on mantle if it does turn out to be worthwhile. Personally I think with all the new consoles having AMD cards it more than likely will. Poor console ports have plagued a lot of games this generation and this seems to be the solution to it. If it works as advertised I can' see why devs wouldn't use it.

The 7870 has GCN afaik so it will recieve mantle performance boosts. Theres nothing to stop it tbh even Nvidia can use Mantle if they so wish

Fair enough so, I'll go with whichever is cheapest in 2 weeks.
