On IOS atleast you can't read any journal links without downloading their stupid app, atleast 5 times a week I must click on a post in AH, click on the link automatically without even reading and then the stupid thing tried to redirect me to download their app. It's incredibly annoying and I just wish they would **** off, I'm not downloading their app, just let me read the ****ing article.

No. I don't want their app anyway but that stupid redirect means I'll definitely not download it. I just don't bother with journal links at all now.

Some of the comments there brighten up my day. Excellent for news clips , some great replies but so many silly ones.Never realised just how many stupid / ignorant people that live here. Scary that most of those idiots have a vote.

There's no way I'm downloading that to open the occasional links from here.

What if someone sees the app on my phone?

Can you imagine trying to explain that?!

If you get the app you're not obliged to look at it.

I hate that they require a twitbook or facesh1t account to comment. Why cant i use my boards account seeing its the same company and all?

Do they only want hipsters posting comments?

When I get sick of reading the tripe that gets posted here I mosey on over to the journal.ie app and suddenly realise that you are all surprisingly normal and lovable compared to the headcases that comment over there.:)

Same here and know plenty of others that have done the same.

The Journal get most of their non-news stories from AH. It's a terrible site with crap journalists, it actually makes the Daily Mail look like The Times in comparison.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,648 ✭✭✭Cody Pomeray

The Journal is the journalistic equivalent of exploding diarrhoea.

You can't even accuse them of having an agenda. They need to start actually getting basic facts right before they amount to that level of criticism.

It's the serious media outlets I feel sorry for, especially in the print media. Lots of genuine journalists in Ireland take their jobs seriously, especially when it comes to accurate news reporting.

Then you have these lads setting up an online paper for pennies, and taking business away from legitimate media who are capable of doing a responsible job. Lots of people take what they read on The Journal at face value, I think that's a real problem in a media environment as small as ours.

    No.

What the fuck happened to websites? Are we supposed to download an app for every single website now?

I don't use thejournal, in fact I despise it, but I occasionally get linked to it and I wish to read the article. I'm not going to download an app for a website I despise and don't like to use.

That's the point, they are trying to force me to download the app, so when I try and click a links it redirects me to the App Store and takes me out of safari and that **** just annoys me so I'm definitely not going to down it now.

Stop clicking on Journal links then, genius.

I'm more referring to the posters. Besides the obvious Twitter trolls on The Journal, most of the posters are using their personal Facebook or Twitter accounts & real names, so you inherently get less twats since it's less anonymous. I browse Boards and The Journal daily, and After Hours has gotten almost as bad as 4chan for posters trying to get themselves over, or starting a poll purely to troll, etc.
You get trolls on here starting a topic about religion, or gypsies, or the government, or some fake dilemma they made up (that if was legit, should have gone into personal issues) that's clearly just to get reactions out of people, then a bunch of goofs take the bait and argue for 40+ pages, and the OP never even posts in the thread again - they just sit back and laugh at all the eejits who took the bait. You scan AH and it's full of these useless threads.

Take this thread for example. Someone moaning about nothing.

It's very annoying they are pretty much the only site on the web that tried to force you to download their app. Plenty give you a message but no-one else is so stupid as to force you away from using their site. Total amateur hour stuff, although the content is the same, so it's not like anyone is missing much.

I generally don't but sometimes when I go into a thread I just automatically click the link without looking to see where it's from so I can see what the thred is about. Thanks I'm expecting my membership from Mensa any day now.

I have downloaded it OP. I find it handy for a quick glance at the days headlines. I never bothered linking Facebook or Twitter to it as I can't be arsed replying to any of the comments on it.

Nobody tells the OP what to do. He's a maverick.
Sure, you can try & tell him to download it to make life easier or simply stop clicking on the links, but he listens to nobody - he's his own boss. Dare I say he'd probably do the opposite of what he's told because that's how he rolls. Be careful around him; he's a loose cannon - a wildcard - a non-conformist.

First of all he's a she, secondly I hardly click on journal links for the fun of it knowing what will happen, it's called human error which I have explained to you. Thirdly I don't want to download the app, why should I when the journal has a website, if they want to be as shortsighted as to ostracise a growing group of Internet users that's fine but I don't see why they feel the need to try force me to download their app, no other website that I can think of does that.

This. I read it after it first went live and tried to stick with it hoping it would rise in quality, but the only thing that started to rise for me was my incredulity at how bad it is all too often and on too many subjects. That's before you get to the comments section. Jesus

Yep that's the aspect that jumps out alright, the amateurish vibe. Like a student paper and we're talking Leaving Cert student here(and that's being unkind to LC students), not something that's supposed to be a national outlet of record.

Maybe the forced app bit is because they have a brilliant wheeze to make it a mobile only site. Going forward. Shifting paradigms. That sort of thing. Wouldn't surprise me.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
