9k vs 18k White Gold

    Hi All,

    Im looking for a totally honest independent view on getting a 9k White Gold Engagement ring vs and 18k White Gold Ring.

    Cash is tight on my side so 9k seems an attractive option but if there will be a long time cost involved in it eg re-dipping overly frequently etc... then I might save longer.

    Anyone tell me honestly the pro's and con's of both?

    Both will need to be re-plated on a regular basis as it's white gold. The only difference is the price. 9k has only 37.5% gold, and is a much harder metal. 18ct gold is 75% gold and is softer.

    So it's down to preference/price. Bear in mind that the wedding band metal MUST match (i.e - 9ct e-ring; 9 ct wedding ring, and so on). Otherwise the harder metal will quickly wear down the softer one.

    In America they do 14 carat gold. It is not that widely available here but have seen it in a few jewellers. I suppose it could be a compromise? I went for 18carat white gold shop around there are great deals to be had. I have had mine nearly a year and have not had to get it dipped. The jeweller said once a year. This is why I chose it over platinum as it will look perfect all year round. I think platinum gets so dull like a saucepan and scratches. My jeweller polishes it for free and dips it for €25 but there are cheaper places to get it dipped. The plain wedding bands were €100 for 9carat and €200 for 18 carat so that is something to bear in mind. If you go for yellow gold you won't need to get it dipped :)

    18ct would be softer but tbh they both look exactly the same.
    Personally I would and go for platinum but I needed something that would not break or bend easily,Platinum is also a lot more expensive so not worth it unless you are at risk of destroying a gold one:)
    The other possible issue with white gold is as it is an alloy some people can be allergic to it and the higher the ct the lower the risk.
    The hubby got a palladium wedding ring.
