    Lads ,

Trying to get me hands on a fairly decent SS/Wehrmacht/Gestapo officer uniform for a themed night around Halloween.

Been on loads of sites , all decent repro's seem to be fairly expensive.

I'll buy 1 if I can get it , but I'll hire it otherwise.

A fairly good one , with decorations and tabs etc if anyone can help.

    A lot seem to be for the smaller gentleman , I'm 6'2" , 19 stone , 50" chest etc...

    Any help at all lads

    Cheers

    Liam

There are a couple of, ahem, problems here, Sir.

Most members of the Allgemeine SS were indeed about your height, or even taller, but I fear that few had your 'generously-cut' physique. That effectively lets out [if you'll excuse the pun] hiring of a real one, supposing that you could pursuade the owner to loan out a suit worth around 5-10K euros.

That leaves replications, and in Ireland, you are more likely to be able to hire a Predator outfit [more fetching, IMO, than ANY Nazi get-up] than any of the natty suitings that you seek.

Gestapo uniforms were more likely to consist of a long leather overcoat, like the one worn by creepy guy in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' who got his hand burnt when he picked up the amulet. A fedora or Homberg headgear item and a Teutonic lithp would complete the get-up, but I'm concerned that a gentleman of your fine 'broth of a boy' outline will find sneaking around quite a challenge.

Best of luck, BTW, don't give up just yet, eh?

If you really want to dress like some of the worst scum in history a Nazi Germany Luftwaffe uniform would be easier procured ?

Apologies for kind of playing the man and not the ball but I can't understand why people want to dress up as some of the worst caracters in modern history.

    Wow, some generalisations here.

Sure are. My late Uncle Micky, my Aunt Ruby's second husband, was born in March or April 1920, placed in an orphanage in Dresden a few weeks later. He got his name from the two police officers who handed him in. In 1938 he joined the Wehrmacht as a signaller [Funker] and over the next seven years saw much of the action. First, Poland, then Greece and the Balkans, and then, eventually, Normandy and Belgium, then home, earning a second and first class EK and three close combat awards on the way - a signaller, remember. He ended up in a ditch just outside Moenchengladbach, having been strafed along with the rest of his retreating unit by the Americans, who caught up with him an hour or so later. He was too badly injured to get their instant fix, so he was handed over to the accompanying British medics, who promptly send him to UK to a place near Oswestry in Shropshire, where they were doing great things with rubber arms and legs and even glass eyeballs. Micky needed one of each. My Aunty Ruby was one of the very first female physiotherapists in the service, and they hit if off like a house afire. They got married the year I was born - 1946, and lived very happily until he forgot to wake up one morning back in 1980. Over three hundred people came to his funeral.

He was good and kind and had a wicked sense of humour, and although he had been raised in a Catholic orphanage, he fitted into our Jewish family as though he had been made for us. We loved him and he loved us right back. He had never gone back to Germany even once, for a number of reasons - Dresden was then in the DDR, and the entire district where the orphanage had been was flattened to moondust by the February '45 allied bombings. Besides, he had nobody there either.

I still miss him and his funny stories, and his kindnesses, and the twinkle in his only eye.

Not ALL Germans were nazis in WW2.

That's a great story 'tac'. I love those personal insights. I have to agree with both points of view though, having being heavily involved this summer in a personal 'war crime' research involving a W. SS 'personality,' I have come across many interrogation docs and latterly a 'tapping' file whereby the German POWs conversations were secretly taped.

Having read 'Soldaten' I was expecting the worst from the conversations but any that included guys talking about the attacks on the Jews were told with horror and disgust, the file is over 700 pages and there were none that fitted the profile of blood thirsty baby killers. I think the majority of the sane population agree that the Nazi's and their ideology were warped and inhuman, but I have always been of the belief that not all Germans followed that ideology.

My W.SS 'culprit' however was one person who believed whole heartily in National Socialism and its aims and I have found evidence that he was involved in committing the most inhuman and barbaric crime against innocent civilians in the Ukraine. :(

PS if anyone is interested in 'chewing the cud' about this files or my research, please feel free to send me a PM :)
