Quick question if anyone can help me out.

When the Gardai set up on a motorway flyover doing speed checks on a long straight, do they picture you as you approach or do the get you after you pass under the fly over? Thanks

No idea really, but would have thought it's as you approach the flyover.

So you underpassed the flyover then sped away? Or the other way round?
If you were speeding towards it, Id imagine you are safe on account of two things, the naturally difficult reflective profile of bikes (though I wouldnt take that for granted against a skilled speed gunman) and mainly, the lack of a number plate.
If you were speeding away, theyd just read the plate and get you.

Though, I imagine theres nothing stopping them from recording you approaching, then reading the plate as you ride away so unfortunately Im gonna have to say wait for the few weeks for the letter to see wether or not you managed to escape.

A Garda will give chase if you are to be issued a fine and points. They do not have the capability to take photo's using the laser systems. They do have photo laser units but I'm informed they have mostly been retired and are bulky, tripod mounted systems.

The newer (To my knowledge NOT in Ireland) versions look somewhat like this:

Just FYI, a laser speed gun can take your speed coming towards and away from a flyover. And bikes are not that much more difficult to get a hit from.

I was over the limit on approach, noticed them (way to late) and slowed down before I went under the flyover. So they would have clocked me and pictured me on approach (which is useless as I have no front reg as you mentioned). If they then swung afround to get me after I passed under the floyover, they would indeed get my rear redge, but at that point I would be well under the limit, so not sure how that would work..

You won't be getting a fine or points unless they chased you. That I can assure you. They cannot take photos with laser based equipment.

Also, look at it from this perspective, your on a bike. You put the hammer down, you'll very quickly be up in the 160km/h plus and be gone. A car is limited by traffic, a bike can quickly weave and increase the distance between you and the Garda. Hence why Gardai would very rarely chase a bike, the chance of actually catching up to them is slim. And thats not encouraging speeding, thats just fact.

So for every speeder, they have to hop in the car, pursue you on the motorway and pull you over? Seems like a lot of work and possible dangerous just to issue 1 speeding ticket?

Yeap, pretty much. Irish police forces are extremely underequipped in the anti-speed game.

Also, you have to see it from economy of scale. You get a few people doing say 130km/h. But wait long enough and you'll get the guy hoon-ing it at 140km/h or more. Then its worth pursuing. Also if you have a set of flyovers a decent distance apart, you can just shuttle from one to another and pull people inbetween them. Doesn't take all that long to issue a fine.

They normally radio another stationery car or bike about 1/2 mile up the road that will stop you.

I dont know if it was a coinsidence , very soon after I passed under the flyover an unmarked garda car over took me (was doing about 145kph)..obviously slowed down a bit again but he kept on going.

Normally stay at 130 but the motorway was a very long stratight stretch and feck all traffic about..
