My father in law got a letter last week asking him for his earnings from 2008 to 2012, he is worried he has done something wrong he was a paye worker so all his tax should be spot on, does he just have to send his p60 in or what's the story with it ?
He is searching for them for the last three days in a big panic, if he can't find them can they be downloaded ?

Very strange, did the letter issue from Revenue. Check the address on the letter to ensure it is a correct Revenue office. If he is a PAYE earner than Revenue should already have his details. Did any forms issue with the letter. Is he in receipt of any other income, if not, just get him to ring the tax office to check what details they require.

i thought it was an odd letter to get, he has had it two weeks only told me saturday, i will go and look at the letter myself he is very worried about it, 2 of those years he wasnt even working, he was on sickness benefit for a year before he qualified for pension, i hope its not a scam of some sort, i will get back with more info, thanks

The letter should have a name at the bottom. Give that person a call to verify the letter. Its not uncommon for these letters to go out. If your dad only has paye and social welfare then its pretty straightforward to let revenue know and that will be the end of the matter.
He shouldnt worry tho. Quick call to verify and probably something in writing with the requested details and thats it sorted

The tax office sometimes send out random inquiries. I got one with a long form and rang them and they gave me all the details that they needed.
, I could not believe the information they had on my wife and I, I have been retired for a few years

I went over to see him yesterday and he has given the letter to an accountant so I didn't get to see it, the accountant said it is a genuine letter, thanks for the help, he thought he was in trouble rather than it just being random

Did he deal with the issue of his state pension bit being taxed a couple of years back when it came up first?
