GTA V forum and access for children

I am starting this thread because of something that was pointed out to me by EnterNow.

This game is up in the ranks with xhamster and other porn sites, in my opinion. Why should a child be allowed to come onto the GTA forum and look at ass rape, drug taking and porn?

Some of the material on after hours and other forums is inappropriate also. Are you going to make them private too ?

The game is 18 plus . If they are playing it in real life then their parents have got it for them. If they allow their children play it , they're not going to mind them reading about it online either , are they?

It's up to parents to monitor what their children look up and read about online , not boards, not you .

Fair enough, yep, it's all the parents fault, I have all porn blocked out on the domain controller at home, my kids can't look at any of that stuff.

This thread is silly and just wasting time, how are boards supposed to verify the age of anyone who uses the site; just because I say I'm over 18 doesn't mean that I'm over 18.

As has already been pointed out the responsibility lies with parents to know what their children are doing be that in terms of their internet usage or the games they play.

Also it's nothing like a real video. There's no way I could bring myself to watch a real video of someone being beheaded or killed in any way but I can happily blow someone's head clean off in a video game because you know what? It's just pixels. You need to be a special kind of stupid to think it's ok to do in real life what you can do in games/movies.

Yes, that's the point. The onus is on the parents, not boards. Boards is a discussion site, not a child minding service.

So is this a debate about violence in games or about this forum? Because the OP seems to be getting confused.

Here's the thing; the game is an over 18s. If a parent/adult buys it for a child under this age, then they're being silly. However why should discussion of said game be banned? The film forum often talks about movies that may include scenes similar to GTA. Should discussion of these be banned? TV shows too. Do you want to ban them?

Gta5 is not porn man, Have you played it?

It features very little in the game at all.
It's more killing, pillaging and cars.
Very little rape or sex scenes, but plenty of language used.
If you haven't played it then looking into it from the outside can make it look worse than it is.
I find that some people are inclined to go over the top with what they see.

Not confused, this thread comes from a thread about somone asking should their 10 year old be allowed play GTAV, the responses were videos of ass rape, killing prostitutes and all that good stuff. And then it was pointed out that young children have access to this forum that, people post videos of all this stuff and talk about doing it.

Does that seem right?

What I would say is instead of trying to force your moral highground on us, monitor your own children's online activity and ensure that they do not see such things.

Nope, not a fan of GTA V. Haven't bought it and probably won't any time soon. I feel like I'm one of the only that hasn't much interest in the GTA series. But this isn't the point. The discussion of much worse things occur in After Hours. Do you want all of that to be banned? What about TV shows? I'm pretty sure there have been worst ones. And movies.

Just because you have a crusade against GTA, especially one that is ill-informed, doesn't mean you can force it on the rest of us.

While boards.ie is seemingly 13+, the majority of it would be concerned 18+.

The problem there is people who cannot separate reality from fantasy. I'm not surprised at those responses, because it was a dumb question to ask in the first place. If publishers put an 18 rating on the game, how dumb does a parent have to be that they can't tell the difference between 10 and 18? That's junior infant stuff really.

People being dicks on the internet? Well I never, I need to sit down for a minute to recover from the shock of that one.

In short, Boards has only so much responsibility towards it's users, and can only do so much to protect them; after that, it's up to parents or people themselves to see that Boards is only a tool, like any other discussion forum / social media site on the internet, and if you can't sit on your kids shoulders while they're on the internet, then Boards shouldn't have to do it for you.

Defaulting to that sort of parenting strategy is taking the responsibility off yourself, the same way as a person might depend on anonymous internet posters to tell them how to parent their child.

It's the height of stupidity tbh.
