Anyone know how much the toll is on the way.

    Can it be avoided?

Prolly burn more petrol than the 1.90 you would save tbh

Time. An hour an half the old road versus 45 minutes. Meh, its up to yourself. I tend to go the old & save the diesel but like i said, time might be a factor.

Not sure how you reason that. Motorway driving is hard on fuel to me, 80 - 100 k on the old road taking your time is the most efficient way to go.

    Take the motorway. Do 100km/h.

There's less acceleration (fuel burn), no junctions (possible crash), minimal brake wear/clutch use on the motorway too.

Those savings alone would be close to the toll cost. For a 45 min saving, it would be worth the 2c you might save on the old road.

Why can't you do the same 80km/h - 100km/h on motorway? It would be even more efficient.

Buy a car with 6 gears then that isn't underpowered ???

Time is money and all that, why spend almost an hour extra to save less than 2 quid

The thing is, that no matter how economical you try to drive on regular National and Regional roads, you will use more fuel than on motorway, (assuming you will keep your speed about 80 - 90km/h on the motorway).
It's just on motorway you will be able to keep that speed steady, while on regular road you will have to slow down from time to time and than accelerate back (even for towns, other traffic, etc).
I don't know old N6 between Galway and Athlone too well. I've only driven there few times before M6 was opened.
But I tend to think, that you will probably have to use more than 1.9 euro worth of fuel, when going through old N6 comparing to motorway.

Its only €1.90!!! Just take the motorway ffs.

I think the M6 takes a more direct route too. The old N6 was strange as it headed a long way south to Loughrea and then north to Galway again.
