Storing Onions

At the moment I have stored my onion crop in large plastic boxes, dimensions 4'x2'x6" (122x61x15cm). They are stored rather loosely in single layers per box with the boxes (8) stacked on top on each other in the garage. I am wondering if it is safe to continue to use this method over the winter months. I do check the boxes from time to time and put outside on occasions during dry weather etc. etc. I do not have alot of space available this year, hence the stacking of boxes etc. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
