Shots have been reported fired near the US Capitol in Washington DC, with police locking down offices in the area.

US Capitol Police said a police officer was injured, the Associated Press reported.

Journalists, congressional staffers and tourists were ordered to take shelter at the US Capitol Complex at 14:28 local time (18:28 GMT).

Shutdown and now locked down, how many more downs are they expecting!

I'd imagine that just about every US news channel has cleared the decks to show wall to wall coverage of ....nothing as it's already happened.

The US has Shutdown incorrectly. Would you like to restart the US in Safe Mode (with no guns and free healthcare)-Recommended Option

All they need now is some Indian "tech support" agent to ring up and help fix it for their credit card limit to be extended. :pac:

Home from work at 2pm after starting at 5.30. Saw nothing unusual, heard nothing unusual eventough I spoke to perhaps 30 male and female work colleagues. People just get on with it. And people know that if the news reader raises his/her voice and gesticulates wildly that this is only for effect. Hype rules.
Remember the fiscal cliff last year? remember all the crap that the talking heads were spouting?
The world keeps spinning on it's axis, babies keep getting born and people pass on.
Fox News and the other 24hr "news channels" could make a hugely exciting article about bear shit in the woods. And the sad thing is that some people would believe it.

The information available is a little confusing.

They shot dead a female who was trying to ram the Whitehouse gates with her car...but was she also shooting? And she had a baby with her? Is the baby alive?

it is hilarious watching it on Fox News, even they are finding it difficult not to blame the Tea Party for this clusterfuck

Obama sum's it all up here:
"One faction, of one party, in one house of Congress, in one branch of government, shut down major parts of the government -- all because they didn’t like one law."

Ignore the above, forgot about the thread was about the shooting when I wrote it

Were there two separate things happening? The woman in the car and a shooter who is in custody?

    I'm confused.

I didn't hear any reports of the woman firing a gun.
Could they not have spiked the tyres?
Is it a matter of shoot first and ask questions later?

If she had it she would have used it the first time and why take a child with her?

No i'm looking for logic and help for a "crazy" woman not bullets.

First and foremost, the woman who was driving the car put the child in danger. But, when you look at the video of the car driving away, the cops are surrounding it. Why would they shoot at it when they could clearly see the child?

Nobody knew what was in that car, if it was packed with explosives a lot more people could be dead.
Delicate sensibilities can't be pandered to when dealing with the possibility of massive loss of life

It's not really an option. That close, ricochets etc are uncontrollable, and any further away, it's not really plausible.

AFAIK - and I stand to be corrected - law enforcement isn't told to shoot out tyres nowadays, if they ever were. It's too chancey and the best case scenario is that the car is even less predictable than it was before.

A lunatic driving with threaded tyres gets plenty of grip. If she was on rims she couldn't take off at speed.

You can't shoot out all tyres simultaneously though, assuming you can hit any of them. So you still have an aggressive, mentally unhinged person driving a car even they can't control. It's just not a plausible option, the risks are too high.
