Have you tried Fallon & Byrne, The staff seem pretty knowledgeable in there when I asked for a white french for a gift

Find a good independant wine shop and you're 90% there.

Any of Jean Marc Brocard's Chablis are good. Can get them in O'Brien's.

I wouldn't sully my taste buds with a Jean Marc Brocard Chablis. Silly suggestion.
You must tell me of an independant wine shop. I only seem to find shops manned by stuttering teenagers.

Chablis is a chardonnay grape wine.
I'd agree with the poster above and recommend a white Burgundy like Macon Lugny as a good alternative. It's also a chardonnay grape wine.
What is quite funny is that lots of people say that they don't like Chardonnay but like Chablis!
Superquinn have a good french wine sale at the moment.

by the way, no need to be dick with your faux-witty responses.

I agree Glasso, it is very amusing.

I was merely remarking it is amusing that "lots of people say that they don't like Chardonnay but like Chablis!".

There is no need to resort to such unbecoming language.

There's a huge difference between the wines on sale in a supermarket and those in an independant wine shop. I couldn't source a good Chablis direct from a vineyard for €7.50 so I'd have my doubts about the provenance of such a cheap Chablis. The bottom line is it doesn't make us look bad, in terms of quality they simply don't compare. The supermarkets are the ones with the huge profit margins while the independant shops are struggling.

And before we get in to the whole "if I like it must be good" debate I agree 100%. If you like it drink it and enjoy it.

@ NigelScriven, I fail to see why you'd ask for opinions if you're going to be rude about the replies.

@glasso and earlytobed, if you have a problem with a post please report it rather than resorting to name-calling.

Well I don't get into what supermarkets are doing  but I do stock more than Chablis. I don't stock €7.50 wine because the cost of putting a bottle on a shelf including tax, shipping, wages, production, cork, label etc is over €6 anyway so you're getting, at best, €1.50 worth of wine. My customers don't generally buy in supermarkets so I don't feel as if I'm in competition with them and I'm not going to sell lower quality wines - that's a very slippery slope and I take pride in what I sell. I wouldn't drink it myself so I won't stock it.

BTW we don't do big label big prices either.... just well made quality wines at fair prices. Simple.

In fairness, in this case I think that he was alluding to the above! Whether or not he actually knew in advance knew that Chablis is a chardonnay can never be actually verified :)

@NigelScriven - I strongly suggest that you lose the attitude when posting in this forum & act in a more civil manner towards other posters.
