This story went viral on craigslist there the other day - heartbreaking story about a poor old dog beign used as pait for dog fighters. If you're not moved by the story then you've a heart made of stone in my opinion...

Makes me wonder how much of that dog fighting carry on goes on in our shores? It's a well known fact that our brave politicians have yet to find the energy to take animal welfare in any way seriously enough for proper legislation against cruelty - you hear stories but how widespread is it I wonder?

IMO dog fighters should be sent to a Battle Royale situation on spike Island - let them taste for themselves their own barbarity

Why does every animal cruelty post around here object to harming animals but then suggest harming of humans to balance it out. Its like some bizzare animal sharia law.

    Are you that limited?

Its awful alright and the owner should be punished but why the need for violent retribution?

Wish the bus drivers in my area were that friendly.

A slight exhaggeration that would satisfy kharmic justice.

In truth, people who torture animals should be put away for a long time for the good of society, as it is a sure sign of a tendency towards sadism. People who get a hard-on for animal torture are clearly a danger to society

Lots of dog fighting goes on in Ireland, if anyone has ever had a pet stolen in Ireland, chances are it's been used for baiting and died a horrible death. :(

Find the scum doing this and you'll track down the same scum involved in a lot of other crime in Ireland, so there's not nearly enough attention paid to it.

Contrary to popular belief, travellers actually aren't the primary drivers of this, they would traditionally have shied away from it. But it is becoming more popular among them. (I brought up travellers because they're topical in AH :))

I mostly agree with the second paragraph. But animal lovers who object to animal cruelty and then suggest cruelty to humans as punishment just invalidate their whole argument.

Does more harm to the cause then good IMO because people just associate anyone with that sort of opinion with the ALF nuts and dismiss you.

Anyone who has ever owned a pet for would be aware of the bond you form with these animals. And especially in the case of dogs, how they will give you 100% unconditional love and admiration for their entire lives, no matter how much you could let them down.

Then when you see the horrible things some cowards do to these animals, well you feel outraged. The dogs can't stand up for themselves, won't understand and can't comprehend why they are being abused, they just want somebody to look up to and slobber over and give them a rub, but some spineless dickheads see fit to treat them like they're less than dirt, when that dog could instead be making somebody's life better every day. And when you see that, you want to take that sorry excuse for a human being and make every second of their life agony.

But maybe that's just me

OK, would it be more acceptable just to say that people who dog-fight and/or steal dogs to use as bair for dog fighting sorely deserve a swift kick in the face or 6? It's violence but lets not pretend it's not true either

People who mess around with animals like this just have no respect for any life. Jeffrey Dahlmer started torturing animals and look where he ended up and what he did to others.

Untrue when it comes to organised dog fighting. the 'bait dog' myth has no grounding. if you've ever been around a real game bred american pitbull terrier, you'd know that these dogs dont need bait to get them going. its bred into their blood for generations. Now im not saying all APBT are this way but the scum that fight them at the big money levels have no interest in keeping a 'cold' dog.

at a street level where scum are just throwing dogs on each other then maybe... but thats far removed from organised dog fighting.

I'm in tears reading that... my little dog is currently sleeping away on my lap, and I love her so much. I can't understand how anyone could be so cruel. dogs are truly amazing animals, not just pets, the bond is so much more than that and the love a dog gives you is unconditional. more than that, my dog brought me out of a state of serious depression, my mum says that the dog saved my life and I don't think she's exaggerating one bit. I really can't understand how someone could take such an amazing gift that is a dog's love and do something that cruel.

    words fail me

Unfortunately dog fighting IS one of the worse things in our little country. This is not an American problem, and it's also the reason why bull breeds get vilified - bastards training them to be aggressive and then taking insufficient steps to keep them confined.

I have had many pets and loved them all. Seeing them in pain or suffering would not make me want to torture humans.

Maybe you are just a psycho and are acting out? I am pretty much sure that's it

If you've truly loved an animal and seen someone torture or put them through pain and suffering and would not have ANY desire to hurt the person doing this to them then there's far more strange about that.

"psycho and acting out" Seriously? that's pathetic.

    I don't believe a single person here, upon seeing their dog with a broken leg or arthritis or cancer would have the desire to inflict pain on another person. The key here is;

Seeing someone making the conscious decision to inflict pain on either of my two, purely for sh1ts and giggles, would put me in quite the vigilantist mood.

I actually think there would be far more likely something wrong with you if that wasn't the obvious reaction

I own a lovely Staffie and if someone harmed her I'd break their legs or at least make a damn spirited attempt at it.

So if there was a story about a child being tortured, you would say "It's only torture" because somewhere in the world a child is being tortured and then killed? Because just being tortured is less bad?

Your "point", with all due respect, is bull****.

The original post on Craigslist was flagged and removed, but it's now been reposted with an update:
Never would I have thought my Craigslist post about Mama Jade would go completely viral. I posted it last night, expecting to receive maybe a few emails about it but nothing huge. Today I have received LITERALLY thousands of emails from people all around the United States. My iPhone crashes every time I try to check my mailbox. The response has been overwhelming and has restored a lot of my faith in humanity. Many people and charities have asked if they could donate funds for Mama to get the treatment for her cancer. Tonight I'll do my best to review as many of the emails as possible and I'll make a decision on what the best route to take will be. One thing is for certain though, Mama Jade is getting yet another chance at life.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

―Oscar Wilde predicting Social Media, in The Picture of Dorian Gray
