Hi, Volvo v40, 1.9 td, engine losing a bit of power lately.. was told it could be EGR valve needs cleaning, also air flow meter. I unplugged the air flow meter and cleaned it plus the insert on the manifold it plugs into.. engine still sluggish.

So I attempted to remove the EGR valve to clean it, but I cant seem to remove the outer cylinder.. there must be something Im not doing, wonder could someone throw some light on this please... cheers

Did you get a diagnostic scan done before you went down this road?

should direct you in the right direction to solve your problem!!

I brought it to a local garage and they tried running a diagnostics test on it, but the Volvo V40 wasn't in the diagnostic scanner database of cars.. I did read that the EGR valve clogging with sediment was a common problem with the V40, and it did seem to be pretty splattered looking at the seam when I took a look... so my guess is that the EGR valve has never been cleaned on this car.

    Row-locks. Probably no OBD then.

there is an OBD port under the dash that the diagnostic device plugged into.. maybe I should have done a search under Volvo S40 instead.

I'll post my question on the Volvo forum,

    thanks for having a look.

The port will be there alright. But the obd requirement didn't become compulsory in the diesels until 2004(in Europe). So the standard eobd scanner is unlikely to communicate with it.
